Instructor Impermanence And The Need For Community College Adjunct Faculty Reform In Colorado, Stephen P. Mumme Oct 2018

Instructor Impermanence And The Need For Community College Adjunct Faculty Reform In Colorado, Stephen P. Mumme

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry

This policy letter, prepared for the Colorado State Board of Community Colleges and Occupational Education and submitted in January 2018 reports on the occupational conditions of adjunct faculty in the Colorado Community College System. The document describes the adverse employment and instructional conditions present in the CCCS, arguing that current conditions threaten the quality and integrity of the General Transfer Pathways program (GT-Pathways) in Colorado. The letter advances a range of practical policy reforms for the consideration of Board that, if adopted would improve current working conditions for adjunct faculty and strengthen quality of community college instruction in Colorado.

Terms Of Time For Composition: A Materialist Examination Of Contingent Faculty Labor, Jesse Priest Oct 2018

Terms Of Time For Composition: A Materialist Examination Of Contingent Faculty Labor, Jesse Priest

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry

Bruce Horner’s seminal book, Terms of Work for Composition: A Materialist Critique provided Comp-Rhet WPAs with a methodology for infusing our conversations about work and labor with a holistic understanding of how these reflect on the lived experiences of students, teachers and administrators. Drawing on empirical data including surveys of contingent faculty at a large northeastern research university, as well as textual analysis of teaching material and an NCTE position statement, I propose the inclusion of a materialist-oriented conceptualization of time to the discussion began by Horner and others. Using the lens of how time is allocated, I argue for …

"Collegiality As A Dirty Word? Implementing Collegiality Policies In Institutions Of Higher Education", Courtney Adams Wooten, Megan A. Condis Oct 2018

"Collegiality As A Dirty Word? Implementing Collegiality Policies In Institutions Of Higher Education", Courtney Adams Wooten, Megan A. Condis

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry

Abstract: Collegiality is integral to the healthy functioning of any academic department and is a necessary professional attribute for new faculty, who often spent their graduate school careers with relatively little involvement in institutional politics, to develop. However, the recent trend to explicitly outline tenure and promotion requirements for collegial behavior gives us pause. We question if a collegiality statement for tenure and promotion could function as yet another obstacle between faculty from background that have historically been underrepresented in the academy (women, people of color, LGBTQ individuals, people with disabilities, etcetera) and their bids for tenure.

Learning Analytics: Translating Data Into “Just-In-Time” Interventions, Pauline Salim Muljana, Greg Placencia Jan 2018

Learning Analytics: Translating Data Into “Just-In-Time” Interventions, Pauline Salim Muljana, Greg Placencia

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Innovative Pedagogy

Despite the burgeoning studies on student attrition and retention, many institutions continue to deal with related issues, including D, F, and W grades rates. The emerging and rapidly developing Learning Analytics (LA) field shows great potential for improving learning outcomes by monitoring and analyzing student performance to allow instructors to recommend specific interventions based on key performance indicators. Unfortunately, higher education has been slow to implement it. We, therefore, provide the rationale and benefits of increased LA integration into courses and curriculum. We further identify and suggest ready-to-implement best practices, as well as tools available in Learning Management Systems (LMSs) …

Background: Authentic, real-world projects are the key to providing opportunities for instructional design graduate students to increase the skills they will need once they enter the job market. Purpose: While experiential learning experiences can enhance skill transfer and allow students to network and create artifacts that can be added to a design portfolio, working with student design teams requires additional communication and support on the part of the client. Approach: Building on the Kolb Model of Experiential Learning and the Stout-Rostron model, a 4-C Framework was developed to help create more effective experiential learning experiences for instructional design students. Implications: …

Google Forms In Library Instruction: Creating An Active Learning Space And Communicating With Students, Elena Rodriguez Jan 2018

Google Forms In Library Instruction: Creating An Active Learning Space And Communicating With Students, Elena Rodriguez

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Innovative Pedagogy

The many programs offered through Google’s G Suite for Education have steadily found their footing across the varied fields of librarianship, including instruction. One such program that has potential in encouraging and developing information literacy skills in undergraduate students is Google Forms. From the observation of a Google Form activity used in four sections of a 100-level History course, utilizing Forms during one-shot instruction can create active learning experiences, be a valuable tool in aiding the continuation of a lesson after a completed one-shot, and can play an important role for the librarian when assessing if learning outcomes have been …

Place Based Learning Community Planning Guide, Katlin Goldenberg, Jessica Matthews, Raven Palomera, Steven Margell, Alex Gorman, Amy Sprowles, Matt Johnson

University Reports

The introduction of Place Based Learning Communities (PBLCs) at HSU in 2015 has become an increasingly discussed topic throughout the university. We use the term “Learning Community” in its strictest sense - a curricular approach to education that intentionally links a cluster of courses around an interdisciplinary theme and enrolls a common cohort of students. The production of higher GPAs and retention and significant achievement gap closure among the HSU PBLC cohorts is undeniable.

All components are comprehensive in the fact that they build a sense of community, belonging, and accountability within the students which serve as factors for higher …

This method facilitated community conversations and engaged the community in the research process by incorporating their concerns and potential solutions into a community plan of …

Current Balance Levels In Deaf And Hearing Impaired Children, Megan E. Wink Jan 2018

Current Balance Levels In Deaf And Hearing Impaired Children, Megan E. Wink

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The purpose of this systematic review of literature is to evaluate the current balance levels in deaf and hearing-impaired children. Children with hearing impairments show balance and motor deficits mainly due to damaged or undeveloped areas of the vestibular system. The auditory sense plays a dynamic role in producing functional movements and motor coordination skills. Researchers founded that motor development skills are especially important to Deaf children because better skills lead to participation in Deaf sports as well as increased opportunities for social interaction. For children born or diagnosed as deaf or hearing-impaired, there is still the opportunity to keeping …

Re-Imagining The One-Shot: The Case For Transformational Teaching, Cinthya Ippoliti Jan 2018

Re-Imagining The One-Shot: The Case For Transformational Teaching, Cinthya Ippoliti

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Innovative Pedagogy

Coined by Jack Mezirow, and translated for classroom application by George Slavich and Philip Zimbardo (2012), transformational teaching seeks to increase student “mastery of key course concepts while transforming their learning-related attitudes, values, beliefs, and skills”. The Framework for Information Literacy has caused a widespread shift in how we approach instruction in librarianship as students explore newfound roles as information creators, disseminators, and evaluators. But this is only one of many stops along a journey of self-realization and discovery that they make throughout the duration of a course. Information literacy and transformational teaching share parallel goals and pedagogical methodologies which, …

Middle School Natural Disaster Inquiry Unit With Scaffolding, Megan Mali Ireson-Janke Jan 2018

Middle School Natural Disaster Inquiry Unit With Scaffolding, Megan Mali Ireson-Janke

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Inquiry based learning is complex and challenging. In order to maximize its benefits, it is vital to understand what teaching methods and scaffolds best support different student populations as they are introduced to inquiry-based learning in different contexts. One major challenge of inquiry is organizational: planning the process and organizing the information. This project studied the effectiveness of using a particular scaffolding tool, an advanced organizer template, to support seventh grade science students in an introductory inquiry-based unit. One group of seventh grade students used the advanced organizer template and one group did not. Students chose the type of project …

Writing Center Tutor Training: An Examination Of Emphasis On Critical Pedagogy In Tutor Training Handbooks, Thomas B. King Jan 2018

Writing Center Tutor Training: An Examination Of Emphasis On Critical Pedagogy In Tutor Training Handbooks, Thomas B. King

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Writing center theory has not always emphasized critical pedagogy as part of writing center pedagogy. However, with scholars’ applications of critical lenses such as postmodernism and postcolonialism to critique writing center practice, critical pedagogy has found its way into writing center practices. Self-critical awareness is one key element of critical pedagogy, and through the dialogic application of critical pedagogy in writing center sessions, students can be made aware of the hegemonic nature of academic discourse and why institution and discipline-valued writing is expected over other kinds of writing. Because critical pedagogy has value in writing center contexts, both for the …

The Positive Effects On Attitude Among High School Students Towards Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Mario Castillo-Urbina Jan 2018

The Positive Effects On Attitude Among High School Students Towards Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Mario Castillo-Urbina

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Inclusion in the classroom requires that the local education agency provide services (i.e., direct, related) to support each student’s needs. The philosophy guiding inclusion is that these services will allow each student to keep pace or catch-up with his or her typically developing peers (Elkins, Van Kraayenoord, & Jobling, 2003). Students’ attitudes towards their peers with disabilities have been researched and reported through the years however, little work has examined these attitudes in a physical education setting (Archie & Sherrill, 1989; Block & Malloy, 1998; Block & Zeman, 1996; Tripp, French, & Sherrill, 1995). Researchers have reported that individuals avoid …

The Impact Of An Exercise Intervention On Stereotypical Behaviors In A Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder., Kirsten Nouzovsky

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of an exercise intervention in reducing stereotypical behaviors in a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A single subject A-B-A-B design with a repeating baseline was used for this investigation. The research design will be implemented to determine if an exercise program (i.e., cycling) impact the frequency of stereotypical behaviors demonstrated by a child with ASD. Results indicate that an exercise intervention has the potential to decrease stereotypical behaviors in a child with ASD. While stereotypical behaviors have always been shown to decrease immediately after physical exercise-based interventions (Kern et …

Check-In/Check-Out Teaches Skills For Success, Jennifer Elaine Coyle, Jennifer Coyle Jan 2018

Check-In/Check-Out Teaches Skills For Success, Jennifer Elaine Coyle, Jennifer Coyle

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Struggling students benefit significantly from access to a mentor, who can encourage them and positively reinforce desirable social behavior while helping them learn skills to be successful in society. In some American schools, the Positive Behavior Systems of Intervention and Support (PBIS) is used to encourage youth to learn these skills. The system is broken up into three tiers: Tier I, Tier II and Tier III. Eighty percent of students fall into Tier I and can meet desired school expectations without additional supports. Fifteen percent of students at PBIS schools fit into the Tier II category and exhibit low-level, chronic …

The Impact Of Peer Tutoring Program On Basketball Skills For Children With A Disability, Matt Mark Kaufman Jan 2018

The Impact Of Peer Tutoring Program On Basketball Skills For Children With A Disability, Matt Mark Kaufman

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The purpose of this study was to review evidence-based practices for implementation of peer tutoring programs in general physical education classroom. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 2004 emphasized placing students with disabilities in general education settings (U.S. Department of Education, 2005). Including students with disabilities in general physical education classes may cause challenges not only for the students, but also for the teachers who are often not properly prepared to adapt to students that have various disabilities. Students with disabilities are often behind in their motor development, and because of that, they may benefit from additional instructional adaptations. …

The current study explored the relationship between parental perceptions of stress, self-efficacy, attachment, and child functioning level. Participants were parents of children with ASD enrolled in The Special Beginnings Program (SBP, N = 44) or receiving treatment as usual (TAU, N = 39). Hypotheses included that parental perceptions of child functioning level will be negatively correlated with stress and positively correlated with self-efficacy and attachment. In addition, that parental perceptions of stress will decrease and perceptions of attachment and self-efficacy would increase after Project ImPACT training and at follow-up more so for the parents in the SBP group compared to …

Congruency Between Spoken Language And Guidance Beliefs In Early Childhood Programs, Jennifer Mager Jan 2018

Congruency Between Spoken Language And Guidance Beliefs In Early Childhood Programs, Jennifer Mager

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The language in a child’s environment either supports or weakens the growth of conflict resolution skills. A study using the language sampled from three early childhood educators, (two in family childcare homes and one in a childcare center) found that those in family child care programs reported stronger beliefs that children can solve problems, teachers support the development of problem solving skills, and conflict can create opportunities for learning than was recorded in practice. This was determined with a frequency count of unilateral strategies employed during perceived conflict. The third participant in a childcare center demonstrated congruency between questionnaire-reported positive …

Listening To Our Graduate Students' Feedback: Graduate Student Exit And Alumni Surveys, Alison W. Hong-Novotney

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Student and alumni surveys have become some of the most widely-used methods of assessment of student learning in higher education. While the majority of literature on student surveys and assessment focuses on undergraduate students, this study looks specifically at why graduate student exit and alumni surveys can be valuable tools within a comprehensive assessment plan. Listening to the feedback of current and former graduate students, and then acting upon that feedback, is crucial for the engagement and success of this unique population of students who bring their particular strengths and needs to their educational experiences. This study examined how master’s …

Playing And Learning Through Text And Images: Examining Features Of Adolescent Literacy And The Potential Of Graphic Novels As A Supportive Tool, Emily Ann Bushta

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Graphic novels have been making their way into the classroom steadily during the past two decades. Whether their use is for a pedagogical purpose or pleasure, graphic novels are grabbing the attention of adults and youth alike. As general interest arises surrounding graphic novels, increased scholarship discussing their purpose, structure, and use has appeared across a variety of disciplines. Educators, especially those with younger students, are drawn to the genre. Their interest has produced a growing body of literature; however, these publications often lack quantitative data and typically offer qualitative conclusions about the benefits of graphic novels in classroom contexts. …
