Carlos Bulosan And Filipino Collective Memory: Teaching, Transgression, And Transformation, Jeffrey Cabusao May 2022

Carlos Bulosan And Filipino Collective Memory: Teaching, Transgression, And Transformation, Jeffrey Cabusao

English and Cultural Studies Journal Articles

Who is Carlos Bulosan? Why is he significant? Why teach Bulosan in our classrooms? These questions function as points of departure for this lecture delivered in Summer 2021 for the UNITAS International Lecture Series cosponsored by CLASS and Kritika Kultura. By reviewing the significance of Carlos Bulosan, this talk provides an opportunity to examine the continued relevance of Bulosan and his works for the twenty-first century. A pioneering Filipino writer of the twentieth century, Bulosan developed a unique transgressive aesthetic that travels across national and literary boundaries and, in the process, reimagines the boundaries of Filipino identity and literary categorization. …

Examining The Disproportionate Diagnosis Of Learning Disabilities, Rebecca Reynolds

Honors Projects in Applied Psychology

This thesis examines various factors and intricacies of inequitable diagnoses of learning disabilities, specifically looking at the differences that women and BIPOC students have in their diagnosis journey. Grounded in exploring access services and disability rights/justice both at Bryant University and elsewhere, this thesis investigates the intricacies of social class, societal norms, and cultural effects on learning disability. It compares what the secondary data reports on diagnosis of learning disabilities to the experience of Bryant students. Additionally, it examines gaps found in secondary research.

Climate Change And Racial Violence, Aidan Connors Apr 2022

Climate Change And Racial Violence, Aidan Connors

Bryant University Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies

Climate change poses the greatest threat mankind has ever seen, not since WW2 is the damage potential so great for humanity. Humanity’s understanding of the dangers that climate change presents isn’t something new, newspaper archives show articles warning about the dangers of carbon output into the atmosphere as early as 1912 (Roney and Otamatea). Despite our knowledge of the dangers, the actions necessary to fight climate change aren’t being taken because of the risk to profits it presents for companies.

Breaking Bias, Building Belonging: Racism And Misogyny In Campus Communities, Kayla Batalha Apr 2022

Breaking Bias, Building Belonging: Racism And Misogyny In Campus Communities, Kayla Batalha

Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies

Breaking Bias, Building Belonging: Racism and Misogyny in Campus Communities is a project that uses art as a research medium in order to first understand how the Bryant community perceives issues of race, gender, and bias, as well as using creative modes of expression to educate participants on issues that are often invisible and go undiscussed on campus. Using qualitative and ethnographic research methods, this exhibit is infused with both primary and secondary research. Data gathered from the literature review explores the theme of community, which serves as the foundation for this project that was subsequently narrowed to focus on …

Life As It Is, And Where I Want It To Be, Christopher Black Feb 2021

Life As It Is, And Where I Want It To Be, Christopher Black

Bryant University Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies

Are you living a purposeful life? Ask yourself this regularly, and you will find yourself embarking on an expedition for passion; Is this not what we should be searching for each and every day? The word “purpose” can be defined as the reason why we do things. Without purpose we are essentially blind in all of our endeavors. At the beginning of every executive summary, at the forefront of every entrepreneurial venture, and within the crux of our hearts, lies purpose. Discovering your purpose is said to harvest empowerment, fluffiness, and happiness.

Shannon Soundscape, Satrina-Mae Shannon Feb 2021

Shannon Soundscape, Satrina-Mae Shannon

Bryant University Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies

As a commuter student who does not live on campus, I elected to sit on my back patio for this listening exercise. While I had initially thought that staying relatively close to my house would be somewhat redundant in terms of what I would hear, I was pleasantly shocked to hear just how many sounds, be it human or nonhuman, ring out on my street in a given moment. Looking back, I think I had just never taken the time to actually listen to them.

I live near many trees, so the sound of birds chirping, or squirrels climbing is …

Morrison Soundscape, Ellie Morrison Feb 2021

Morrison Soundscape, Ellie Morrison

Bryant University Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies

I am staying in an apartment in the Museum District of Philadelphia, so I went to the courtyard in the middle of the property. I took some snacks with me, took the elevator to the ground floor, then walked outside and chose a white Adirondack chair in the middle of the grass. Being in a big city, I heard much more man-made, urban sounds than I did clean, natural sounds.

The first thing I noticed was the low, almost throaty, rumble of motorcycles on the freeway not even 200 yards away. It came in non-metrical bursts for the first minute …

Leszczynski Soundscape, Joseph Leszczynski Feb 2021

Leszczynski Soundscape, Joseph Leszczynski

Bryant University Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies

Sitting outside of the Fisher Student Center, on black lacquered chairs, was the location of my soundscape experience. Being outside and an epicenter of activity, the amount of noise there was abundant. I was still outdoors, thus explaining the neutral noise of the environment. Some of the natural, non-human sounds I heard were from insects. A distinct, crescendo buzz came from above in the trees. The timbre was brash, like a trumpet that hit a high pitch note with vibrato. In addition, there were occasions where dried leaves would hit the ground from falling off a branch. This noise was …

Donlan Soundscape, Christopher Donlan Feb 2021

Donlan Soundscape, Christopher Donlan

Bryant University Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies

To capture the soundscape, I spent some time on the patio behind my apartment building and was able to identify a number of sounds, both natural and manmade. The location I was at sits right along the Blackstone River however, so the sound of the running water generates lots of white noise. While not changing in rhythm or pitch, the water produced a smooth and subtle tone that slightly masks the other sounds.

The most prominent sound I heard was the chirping from crickets. Their sound has a very fast paced rhythm that occurs in a steady pattern, however the …

A Typical Afternoon In The Hustling Streets Of Mumbai, Ishan Mehta Feb 2021

A Typical Afternoon In The Hustling Streets Of Mumbai, Ishan Mehta

Bryant University Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies

This soundscape activity is going to give you an experience of a typical afternoon in the hustling streets of Mumbai. I live on the 18th floor of an apartment building in a suburb called Versova. One may think that staying at a higher floor would mean that there would be less sound, but in reality sound travels up through the building and you can hear everything. Since I could not go out of the house I walked around in my balcony which faces the ocean and right under is the main street, this is what I could hear. As …

Bubble Or Trouble? Restarting Professional Sports While Weighing The Risks For Athletes, Jared Wu, Matt Sidell Jan 2021

Bubble Or Trouble? Restarting Professional Sports While Weighing The Risks For Athletes, Jared Wu, Matt Sidell

Research and Innovation Village

During an unprecedented time in our society, professional sports are just starting to make their returns despite not having a vaccine or cure for COVID-19. The NBA is playing in their Orlando bubble in the ESPN World Wide of Sports complex to conclude their season in one place. The NHL has one hub city for each conference, Toronto for the eastern and Edmonton for the western. Looking beyond the two leagues, the impact the pandemic has had on society has been substantial, and restarting sports for the entire country during this time may end up being a tall task. With …

Examining The Relationship Between All-Female Education And Work Outcomes, Angelica Provost Nov 2020

Examining The Relationship Between All-Female Education And Work Outcomes, Angelica Provost

Honors Projects in Management

This thesis is aimed at studying the long-term impact an all-female secondary education has on work outcomes. Most of the current research on an all-female education pertains to current secondary students or those who are in college. There are minimal studies that analyze if one’s educational environment has a long-term influence on their career. This study hypothesized that an all-female secondary education has a long-term impact on job satisfaction, job performance, and job engagement. This impact is manifested through the Big 5 personality traits of conscientiousness and extraversion, as well as the multifaceted personality trait Core Self Evaluation (CSE). While …

The Battle Over Wastewater Between Woonsocket And North Smithfield, Melissa Prosky Jun 2020

The Battle Over Wastewater Between Woonsocket And North Smithfield, Melissa Prosky

Staff and Faculty Journal Articles

From 2012-2017, the communities of Woonsocket and North Smithfield engaged in a protracted dispute concerning wastewater disposal. For thirty years, the two jurisdictions had maintained a signed service agreement. Following its expiration, however, Woonsocket imposed a new host fee on North Smithfield. Woonsocket needed to upgrade the facility in order to comply with mandates from the RI Department of Environmental Management. Over the next five years, leaders from both jurisdictions vociferously fought over the new fee. At the same time, leaders within communities experienced their own divisions. This case study highlights the challenges that decision makers faced in both communities. …

Model Comparison In The Introductory Physics Laboratory, Brian S. Blais Feb 2020

Model Comparison In The Introductory Physics Laboratory, Brian S. Blais

Science and Technology Department Faculty Journal Articles

Model comparison is at the heart of all scientific methodologies. Progress is made in science by constructing many models (possibly of different complexities), testing them against measurements, and determining which of them explain the data the best. It is my observation, however, that in many introductory physics labs we provide students with the materials and methods to verify the “correct” model of the experiment they are performing, e.g. measuring “g” or verifying the period of a pendulum. In this way, we do our students a disservice and don’t allow them to experience the richness and creativity that constitutes …

Mapping Policy Issues: A Simple, Active-Learning Exercise For Critical Thinking, Richard Holtzman May 2019

Mapping Policy Issues: A Simple, Active-Learning Exercise For Critical Thinking, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

Many students in my undergraduate American politics courses struggle to see policy issues as complex. Too often, they get stuck making surface-level observations or jumping straight to personal opinions, falling far short of critical thinking. This article introduces an active-learning exercise—situational mapping—that provokes students to recognize and think critically about the complexities of policy issues such as immigration, abortion, campaign financing, and guns. Adapted from a grounded-theory research technique, the goals of this mapping exercise are to (1) help students see policy issues as messy, (2) encourage them to “wallow in complexity” rather than oversimplify, and (3) provoke them to …

Career Technical Students And Post-Secondary Education: A Hidden Population In The Massachusetts Education System, Nicolette Haug May 2018

Career Technical Students And Post-Secondary Education: A Hidden Population In The Massachusetts Education System, Nicolette Haug

Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences

This research looks into Career-Technical Education in Massachusetts, and what makes these institutions successful. Five career-technical high schools in Massachusetts are highlighted in this capstone project, including Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School in Upton, MA, as well as all of the public high schools in the regions. By analyzing standardized test scores and demographics, this project seeks to understand the differences in the way each school is performing academically, and recognizes Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School as a positive outlier. The capstone concludes with recommendations of success factors other career-technical high schools can adopt in order …
