Your Story, Your History: Social Studies And History Instruction In A Nicaraguan Primary School, Nicole Akin

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In the latter half of the 20th century, the country of Nicaragua experienced major political upheaval, which not only affected political, social and economic policies, but education as a whole. Education has been a constant struggle in Nicaragua – this country is the second poorest in Latin America and has the highest dropout rate in Latin America with 52% of individuals leaving school before finishing their primary school education. The Sandinista movement rallied the country together and as a result helped to foster a rich culture and history of Nicaragua, which can be found in primary school social studies classes. …

Making Math Happen: Exploring Math Ipad Games With Sixth Grade Students, Molly Bennett

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Technology is a great resource for teachers. It can enhance lessons, activities, assessment and general functions of the classroom. The use of technology in education can be beneficial, but may present challenges for pre service and in service teachers. Integrating technology in the classroom is the foundation of teaching. However, research on iPad use in the classroom is quite limited. This qualitative research study took place at a K-8 school in Southeastern, Massachusetts. A study group of five sixth grade students was chosen by the classroom teacher. The teacher selected the students by looking at their standardized test scores, class …

The Effects Of Self-Assessment Using Coach’S Eye On Perceived Competence In Elementary Physical Education, Joseph Bergin

Master’s Theses and Projects

Engaging students in meaningful experiences that inspire them to be active both in and out of school is the primary goal of quality physical education programs (National Association of Sport and Physical Education & American Heart Association, 2012). One of the strongest influences on student engagement in physical education is their perceived physical competence (Bevens, Fitzpatrick, Sanchez, & Forrest, 2010; Carney, 2012). The purpose if this study was to explore how perceived physical competence was affected by the use of video feedback using the Coach’s Eye application. Participants in this study were 60 fourth and fifth grade students. There were …

Talking About Writing Across The Secondary And College Community, Michelle Cox, Phyllis Gimbel Jan 2016

Talking About Writing Across The Secondary And College Community, Michelle Cox, Phyllis Gimbel

Secondary Education and Professional Programs Faculty Publications

Many have commented that higher education is becoming increasingly fragmented, leading to the overspecialization of scholars, disciplinary discourses that are opaque to those outside the field, and lack of cross-pollination among disciplines (Kerr). WAC has long been seen as a movement that creates connections among disciplines. In fact, these connections are often created through the workshop, the quintessential WAC experience, as it “bring[s] faculty together around the same table”—bringing together people who may work at the same institution but, in practice, work worlds apart (Cox 317). More recently, this movement to bring people around the same table has come to …

Artist’s Statement:

My work is a result of my personal experiences as a woman. It is a reflection and interpretation of time and place. My intention is to convey an idea based on memories and the passage of time. I explore and reflect on themes and subject matter that are connected to the natural process of my life. Therefore, my investigation of the past and present is an important force in my creative process. The multiple roles I’ve chosen continue to have a strong hold on me, and I search to find the balance.

Curriculum Decision-Making Processes Of Beginning Special Education Teachers, Camille Schulman

The Graduate Review

Teachers are constantly making decisions in their classrooms based on a variety of factors. With a sample of twelve first or second year special education teachers, this participatory action research project explores the decision-making processes in regards to curriculum development. Using group interviews, individual interviews, participant content maps, and a survey, data examining the decisions these teachers make about curriculum in their classroom was collected. These qualitative and quantitative data sets will be coded, analyzed, and compared to identify common elements and themes among participants. Preliminary results show that teachers struggle on a daily basis with different aspects of curriculum …

Export To Arduino: A Tool To Teach Processor Design On Real Hardware, Michael Black Jan 2016

Export To Arduino: A Tool To Teach Processor Design On Real Hardware, Michael Black

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Many computer organization courses teach digital design and processor architecture without a hardware lab or physical equipment. This paper introduces a module to allow students to export digital designs as C programs that run on an inexpensive Arduino Uno, thereby allowing students to test and observe their designs in actual hardware with minimal setup time and equipment. The module runs within Emumaker86, an open-source digital design tool previously developed by the author for teaching microprocessor architecture, and can handle designs ranging from simple combinational circuits to a complete processor. Students were given this module in an undergraduate "Systems Computing" course, …

Counselor Education Faculty Publications

From the article:

“The goal of our current multiyear mobile device and app curation project is to explore ways in which iOS and Android mobile devices and related apps can be used to enhance counseling and therapy, counselor education, training and wellness promotion. Initial emphasis was on the iPad. The hope is that the results of the project will significantly streamline the app search process for counselors, human service and other allied health providers, counselor educators, trainers and counselor education students, and increase the ways and frequency in which mobile devices are purposively integrated into our work. We also hope …

Discovering How The Pieces Fit Together: An Interdisciplinary Research Project Integrating The Disciplines Of Elementary Education And English, Angela Skrabec Jan 2016

Discovering How The Pieces Fit Together: An Interdisciplinary Research Project Integrating The Disciplines Of Elementary Education And English, Angela Skrabec

Undergraduate Review

Introduction:
When I began my research project roughly two and half years ago, I had one main goal in mind: to find out the reasoning behind Massachusetts mandating Elementary Education majors, like myself, to have a second major in the sciences or the humanities. My mind was consumed with the fact that I wanted to become an elementary school teacher, so why in the world would the state require me to have two complete undergraduate degrees when I would really only use my degree in education? This question is what sparked the whole idea of performing an interdisciplinary undergraduate research …

The Effects Of Physical Education Experiences On Homeschooled Students And Families, Natasha Kane Jan 2016

The Effects Of Physical Education Experiences On Homeschooled Students And Families, Natasha Kane

Undergraduate Review

Introduction:
The number of homeschooled students in the United States continues to rise year after year. In 2011, 3.4% of the school-age population was being homeschooled, which was a jump from 2.9% in 2007 (HSLDA, 2013). A study done by the U.S. Department of Education conducted in 2013 reported that approximately 1.77 million students are homeschooled in the United States (United States Department of Education, 2013). Due to these substantial numbers, many students and families are having to find ways to fulfill certain requirements, one of which being physical education. Physical education is a mandated subject in public schools and …
