Comments On Deecd Discussion Paper: New Directions For School Leadership And The Teaching Profession, June 2012, Lawrence C. Ingvarson

Dr Lawrence Ingvarson (Consultant)

The Discussion Paper identifies three fronts on which the Victorian Government will take action over the next ten years. Action 1: Attract great people into teaching: attract stronger candidates and improve their preparation. Action 2: Create a high performance profession: stimulate a culture of excellence and effective professional development. Action 3: Provide strong direction and support: elevate the role of leadership at school and system levels. As a general observation, each of these areas for action is important. The diagnosis of areas requiring action is accurate. However, the prescription is weak in some areas and needs to be strengthened.

Standards For Graduation And Initial Teacher Certification: The International Experience, Lawrence C. Ingvarson

Dr Lawrence Ingvarson (Consultant)

The focus of this report is on policies and practices for assuring the quality of teacher education programs and of teachers who graduate from those programs. International interest in policies that promote teacher quality has increased markedly in recent years (OECD, 2005). With mounting evidence that the most important in school influence on student achievement, is teachers’ knowledge and skill (e.g., Hattie, 2008; Hanushek, 2004) policymakers have been giving closer attention to strategies that will recruit, prepare and retain the best possible teachers. These strategies call for clear and valid descriptions of what good teachers know and do, which teaching …

Field-Based Experience In Light Of Changing Demographics, Fred Jay Krieg, Joyce Meikamp, Stephen L. O’Keefe, Sandra S. Stroebel

Joyce Meikamp

Due to changing demographics of students admitted to the School Psychology Training Program at Marshall University Graduate College, it has become imperative to significantly expand field experiences beginning in the first semester to address the lack of educational background of most of the students entering the program. This organized sequence of field experiences continues throughout the program, parallel to classroom instruction, affording opportunities for students to put theory into practice and to interact with professionals in the field, while also allowing for exposure to the public school environment. The collaborative field experience sequence provides the students with early and continuous …

Dr John Cresswell (retired)

For some time in Australia, the Schools Council of the National Board of Employment, Education. and Training has been concerned with issues concerning the quality of teaching as evidenced through its reports on Teacher Quality: An Issues Paper (1989) and Australia's Teachers: An Agenda for the Next Decade (1990). The Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians set out two broad goals, the second of which stated that by the end of secondary schooling: All young Australians become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens. (MCEETYA, 2008) Some important attributes of ‘active and informed citizens’ are listed in the elaboration of this goal. These indicate a broad view of the student learning outcomes that are expected to be gained from civics and citizenship education, including: appreciate Australia’s social, cultural, linguistic and religious diversity, and have an understanding of Australia’s system of government, history and …

Coping With The Senior Thesis Seminar: Some Thoughts For Both Students And Professors, Harlan M. Smith Ii, Arden K. Sansom Aug 2012

Coping With The Senior Thesis Seminar: Some Thoughts For Both Students And Professors, Harlan M. Smith Ii, Arden K. Sansom

Harlan M. Smith

Based on our experiences as professor and student. respectively, in. the undergraduate Senior Thesis Seminar, we offer our thoughts on the fundamental issues facing participants in this class. We speak to students about selecting a topic, choosing a supervisor, working with classmates, delivering the oral presentation, and coping with difficulties. We advise on professors helping students select a topic, monitoring student progress, adjusting to different types of students, approaching the oral presentations, interacting with faculty in the presence of students, and injecting themselves into student work. Consideration of these ideas-presented as a series of lessons--should promote more effective learning experiences …

Standardized Query Formatting, Joyce K. Kutin

Evolving more than thirty years ago, the Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) covers a wide variety of applications that impact all health care segments throughout the United States. The DRGs are a patient classification scheme originally developed as a means of relating the type of patients a hospital treats (i.e., casemix) to the costs incurred by the hospitals.

The DRG terminology has experienced evolutionary growth through later generations: Major Comorbidities and Complications (MCC), Comorbidities and Complications (CC) and All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APR DRG). This process directly impacts the reimbursement or payment re-distribution by Medicare and Medicaid.

Medicare continues …

Stephanie Pace Marshall, Ph.D.

The Growing Excellence Gap in K-12 Education, Plucker, Burroughs, and Song (2010) provided compelling evidence that "the presence of an excellence gap is demonstrated on both national and state assessments of student performance," with "economically disadvantaged, English Language Learners, and historically underprivileged minorities representing a smaller proportion of students scoring at the highest levels of achievement" (p. 28). Three "case stories" of students from IMSA illuminate some of the (a) challenges and opportunities inherent in igniting STEM talent in urban youth and ensuring their success; (b) principles for designing and creating learning experiences and environments that ignite and nurture the …
