A Numerical Solution For The Ultimate Strength Of Tubular Beam-Columns, Arnold L. Wagner

Dissertations and Theses

To provide a basis for the development of interaction curves for tubular beam-columns of annular cross section, a general purpose beam-column computer program is developed, and used to determine ultimate load capacities. The paper presents the analytical model and the computer method. The analytical results are compared with published test data as well as experimental data obtained as part of this project.

A Study Of The River : Social Studies As The Core Of The Curriculum For Five And Six Year Olds, Carol Yahr Tucker Jun 1976

A Study Of The River : Social Studies As The Core Of The Curriculum For Five And Six Year Olds, Carol Yahr Tucker

Graduate Student Independent Studies

Using social studies as the core of the curriculum is an effective educational framework for five and six year olds. When this curriculum starts with the children's life experiences and goes on to study some aspect of their community or environment, children can begin to understand the interconnectedness of the adult world. Young children feel the excitement of learning when they immerse themselves in a study; they find that learning can be a vital process related to their needs and experiences, rather than a dry transfer of skills and pre-existing bodies of knowledge.

Test 1211: Case M-B 4/94 Diesel (Unimog), Nebraska Tractor Test Lab

Nebraska Tractor Tests

EXPLANATION OF TEST REPORT GENERAL CONDITIONS Each tractor is a production model equipped for common usage. Power consuming accessories may be disconnected only when the means for disconnecting can be reached from the operator station. Additional weight can be added as ballast if the manufacturer regularly supplies it for sale. The static tire loads and the inflation pressures must conform to recommendations in the Tire Standards published by the Society of Automotive Engineers. PREPARATION FOR PERFORMANCE RUNS The engine crankcase is drained and refilled with a measured amount of new oil conforming to specifications in the operator’s manual. The fuel …

Holography: Capturing The Third Dimension, Michael Timmons

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Holography, the three-dimensional recording of interference patterns on film has unlimited possibilities in the fields of science, art, technology, and media. Three types of holograms, the "flat" or plane, circular, and white light, are presently being produced successfully and inexpensively in the high school situation. The novelty of holography arouses curiosity while allowing the student to experience the application of interference phenomenon.

Science Foundations: A Science Program For The Non-Science Major, James A. Shymansky Jan 1976

Science Foundations: A Science Program For The Non-Science Major, James A. Shymansky

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The Science Foundations program at the University of Iowa consists of a sequence of general science courses designed specifically for the non-science student. The program is unique both in course content and instructional strategy. Recognizing that student backgrounds and needs differ greatly between the science and non-science major, the Foundations program is offered as an alternative to the traditional lecture-based science courses. Whereas the lecture-based courses emphasize the recall and application of factual material, Science Foundations stresses problem- solving strategies based on laboratory experience. Consequently, practically all of a student's time is devoted to "hands-on" activity with problems in the …

Excellence In Science Teaching Award Program Prior To 1976, David Mccalley

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The Iowa Academy of Science has a long and distinguished record of encouraging improvement in science education within Iowa's public and parochial schools. Evidence of this may be seen in its support of the Iowa Junior Academy of Science, The Iowa Science Teachers Journal and various Academy committees having as their major concern the promotion of science education. In past years, the Recognition and Awards Committee of Iowa Academy of Science has functioned to identify outstanding science and mathematics teachers in Iowa.

Scientific Bulb Snatching, V. G. Devonald Jan 1976

Scientific Bulb Snatching, V. G. Devonald

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The subject of plant morphology is frequently considered a boring topic by both teacher and pupil, and consequently given a somewhat inadequate treatment. Several reasons can be adduced for this unfortunate neglect of a field of knowledge which is, in fact, particularly suitable for intensive study in schools. An unnecessary restriction of teaching types (e.g., broad bean, crocus, sweet pea, etc.) may evoke bored familiarity, or the subject may be given such a superficial treatment that no morphological analysis is achieved and interest is not aroused. Often, a grossly teleological approach is adopted in teaching morphology and many unproven assumptions …

Iowa - Upstep: A Program Overview, Vincent N. Lunetta Jan 1976

Iowa - Upstep: A Program Overview, Vincent N. Lunetta

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Over the past five years the program for science teacher preparation at the University of Iowa has been in the process of gradual evolution. The changes have been stimulated by a grant from the National Science Foundation, by teachers, and by science educators. Many teachers in the state of Iowa have played a major role in the development of the current program. In the current UPSTEP program the professional education sequence has become more thoroughly integrated with the student's total program and incorporates a series of clinical experiences in the schools.
