Responsiveness Of The Sit-To-Stand Test To Measure Lower Body Power, Jose Antonio Tan

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Muscle power declines at a faster rate and demonstrates a stronger association with physical function than strength, emphasizing the growing importance of assessing muscle power. The Sit-to-Stand (STS) test is a novel test to measure lower body power that is valid and reliable, while also being portable and affordable. However, its responsiveness to change or longitudinal validity is unknown. PURPOSE: To examine the responsiveness to change of the Sit-to-Stand test in comparison to the pneumatic leg press in measuring lower body power. METHOD: 23 community-living adults, aged 50-80, were recruited. Participants underwent a full body strength training workout twice a …

The Ability Of Cardiac Autonomic Modulations Stress Index To Independently Predict Vo2max In Cardiometabolically Healthy Individuals, Leticia C. De Souza, Ricardo Torres, Chris Wynveen, Leroy Bolden, Tomas Chapman-Lopez, Leslee Funderburk, Jeffrey S. Forsse

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Cardiac autonomic modulation (CAM) is crucial for heart health, mediated by the sympathetic and autonomic systems (SAS). The link between CAM and aerobic exercise underscores the importance of aerobic fitness assessments in optimizing training to enhance performance. Heart rate variability (HRV) assesses CAM in various healthy populations, with the Stress Index (SI) identified as key in determining the SAS regulation involvement in performance and recovery outcomes. The SI may provide a quick and non-invasive metric to assess aerobic performance. PURPOSE: To determine if the SI can accurately predict aerobic performance via VO2max in healthy individuals free of metabolic …

Once-Weekly Single-Set Resistance Training Improves Body Composition And Muscular Strength In Older Adults, Tyler M. Weiss, Malcolm T. Whitehead Feb 2024

Once-Weekly Single-Set Resistance Training Improves Body Composition And Muscular Strength In Older Adults, Tyler M. Weiss, Malcolm T. Whitehead

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The loss of muscle mass associated with aging, known as sarcopenia, is a public health issue among the older population. Physical activity, in particular resistance training, has been shown to be an effective treatment in countering age-related muscle loss. Time is a primary barrier for adhering to an exercise program, and a time-efficient training modality may be useful for older individuals who perceive time as a barrier to exercise. The Exercise is Medicine Initiative encourages physicians and other health care providers to include physical activity when designing treatment plans. PURPOSE: The purpose of the investigation was to determine whether once-weekly …

Glutathione Peroxidase Enzymatic Activity In Response To Transient Hypercapnic Aerobic Exercise, Ryan Curtis, Jose M. Moris, Christian J. Chang, Kylie Allen, Brandon Arnold, Yunsuk Koh Feb 2024

Glutathione Peroxidase Enzymatic Activity In Response To Transient Hypercapnic Aerobic Exercise, Ryan Curtis, Jose M. Moris, Christian J. Chang, Kylie Allen, Brandon Arnold, Yunsuk Koh

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Nasal breathing (NB) during aerobic exercise has gained attention due to its potential benefits to physical performance and health adaptations. However, it is unclear how an NB-induced increase in the partial pressure of CO2 (PetCO2) affects the enzymatic activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPX). PURPOSE: To determine the activity of GPX after 1-month of transient hypercapnic training induced by NB. METHODS: Fourteen males (age = 20.57 ± 1.22 yrs) were randomized to either the NB (n = 8) or combined breathing (CB, n = 6) group. Participants performed supervised aerobic training 4 times per week at ~70% …

A Retrospective Analysis On The Relationship Of Age, Personal Shooting Practice, And Years Of Experience With Dynamic Shooting Scores, Kailea Oliver, Michael Jiroutek, Jennifer Bunn Feb 2024

A Retrospective Analysis On The Relationship Of Age, Personal Shooting Practice, And Years Of Experience With Dynamic Shooting Scores, Kailea Oliver, Michael Jiroutek, Jennifer Bunn

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Swat (special weapons and tactical) operators often need to perform intense physical activity and display weapon accuracy for an undetermined period of time. Strength and conditioning training have been found to play a vital role in the performance of SWAT operators during physical assessments, but little research has been devoted to training to improve dynamic marksmanship. PURPOSE: To evaluate the relationship between age, personal shooting practice, years of law enforcement experience, and years of SWAT experience with dynamic shooting accuracy. METHODS: SWAT operators (n = 195) completed a survey to self-report their training behaviors and previous experience (number …

Promotion Of Healthy Lifestyles In College Freshmen Through The Fitu Program, Jasper Sanford, Amber M. Chelette, Amanda Perry

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

This study is a continuation of a previous study assessing the physical health of first-year college students. With the obesity epidemic steadily on the rise in America, young adults are the most susceptible to weight gain as they embrace life’s new chapter. PURPOSE: FitU is a program implemented into the core class, Concepts of Wellness, at Ouachita Baptist University. This program was designed to combat the weight gain called the “freshman-15” while promoting healthier lifestyle choices through diet and exercise. METHODS: At the beginning and end of the semester, 196 students were given a basic fitness evaluation including the five …

Validity Of Body Volume Estimates From A Smartphone 3-Dimensional Scanning Application, Ethan G. Tinoco, Christian Rodriguez, Madelin R. Siedler, Christian Lavalle, Christine M. Florez, Sarah White, Alexandra Brojanac, Jaylynn Rasco, Gabrielle Dehaven, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Body volume (BV) indicates the total 3-dimensional (3D) space an individual occupies. BV is either used alongside body mass in density-based two-compartment models or in conjunction with other body components in multi-compartment models to estimate body composition (BC). BV estimates are typically produced by costly laboratory methods, such as hydrostatic weighing or air-displacement plethysmography (ADP). However, more accessible options are emerging. Smartphone-based 3D scanning uses the phone’s built-in camera to provide a BV estimate in a time-efficient and cost-effective manner. However, few investigations have validated this method against an accepted laboratory technique. PURPOSE: To determine the validity of BV from …
