Lecture Transcripts And Closed-Captioning: Addressing Ada And Udl At Rowan-Virtua So, Steve Garwood, Dawn Shell, Jackie Giacobbe
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
At the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM), recordings of all live lectures are available to students via the Echo360 Lecture Capture system. To improve the accessibility, usability, and usefulness of the recordings, beginning in the 2022-2023 Academic Year, we incorporated automated speech recognition (ASR) to create a transcript and closed-captioning for lecture recordings in the Synergistic Guided Learning (SGL) curriculum. For quality control, work-study medical students and volunteers reviewed and edited the transcripts and released updated versions for student use. Use and perceived impact were measured using a survey administered via Qualtrics. Eighty-eight percent of respondents indicated that adding …
The Effects Of Response To Intervention On Reducing The Numbers Of African American Students In Special Education, Kimberly Savino
The Effects Of Response To Intervention On Reducing The Numbers Of African American Students In Special Education, Kimberly Savino
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if states that have implemented Response to Intervention (RTI) programs had a reduction in the numbers of African American students receiving Special Education. Historically, there has been an overrepresentation of minorities, particularly African Americans, receiving special education in America's schools. In 2004, the federal government amended the Individual with Disabilities Act (IDEA) to include RTI. The RTI initiative has the possibility to reduce special education referrals through the use of research-based interventions, progress monitoring, and data collection. The premise behind RTI is to identify students at-risk for academic difficulties and provide the …
Creation And Implementation Of A Flipped Jigsaw Activity To Stimulate Interest In Biochemistry Among Medical Students, Charlene Williams, Susan Perlis, John Gaughan, Sangita Phadtare
Creation And Implementation Of A Flipped Jigsaw Activity To Stimulate Interest In Biochemistry Among Medical Students, Charlene Williams, Susan Perlis, John Gaughan, Sangita Phadtare
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Learner-centered pedagogical methods that are based on clinical application of basic science concepts through active learning and problem solving are shown to be effective for improving knowledge retention. As the clinical relevance of biochemistry is not always apparent to health-profession students, effective teaching of medical biochemistry should highlight the implications of biochemical concepts in pathology, minimize memorization, and make the concepts memorable for long-term retention.
Here, we report the creation and successful implementation of a flipped jigsaw activity that was developed to stimulate interest in learning biochemistry among medical students. The activity combined the elements of a flipped classroom for …
Research Based Co-Teaching Practices And Their Realization In The New Jersey High School Classroom, Thomas K. Donovan
Research Based Co-Teaching Practices And Their Realization In The New Jersey High School Classroom, Thomas K. Donovan
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative research study reviews co-teaching practices suggested to high school educators by their professional literature. Through a systematic analysis of published studies on the topic, a comprehensive list of suggested co-teaching practices from the past ten years was created. The study then explored the realization of these practices in the high school co-teaching classroom through surveys of 61 high school co-teachers in New Jersey. Both phases of this study assisted with the identification of opportunities for improving co-teaching practices, professional development on co-teaching, and instructional pedagogy.
Comparing Video Modeling To Discrete Trial Teaching For Teaching Daily Living Skills, Nicole Angelina Gubernick
Comparing Video Modeling To Discrete Trial Teaching For Teaching Daily Living Skills, Nicole Angelina Gubernick
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to examine the effectiveness of implementing video modeling to teach daily living skills to a fifteen year old boy who is diagnosed with autism. This was a single subject, repeated measures research design with the repeated measures being teeth brushing, making a sandwich, and doing the dishes. The daily living skills chosen were based upon a rating scale administered to the parents. Baseline data was collected for the three daily living skill tasks using task analysis probing. Once baseline data was collected, discrete trial teaching with implanted. Data was collected and the level of …
What Motivates Reluctant Male Readers?, Cheryl Ann Tartaglione
What Motivates Reluctant Male Readers?, Cheryl Ann Tartaglione
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research study was to better understand the role of reading motivation in a group of students at the Thomas E. Bowe School in southern New Jersey. I wanted to what motivates this group of boys to read and how typical they might be to other reluctant male readers. Qualitative inquiry strategies such as surveys, student interviews, interactive graphic organizers and a teacher interview were used. Upon analyzing the data, motivation for reading was poor. However, student book choice and commonalities in genre selection were consistent with current research. Struggling male readers look for teacher input and …
A Grounded Theory Of Individualized Learning Practices In New Jersey Higher Education, Dennis William Devery
A Grounded Theory Of Individualized Learning Practices In New Jersey Higher Education, Dennis William Devery
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this grounded theory study was to develop a theory, grounded in data provided by faculty, administrators, and institutional document analysis, concerning why and how faculty and administrators at three New Jersey higher education institutions use individualized learning practices. Individualized learning practices, as defined in this study, are the actions, activities, and procedures performed by faculty and administrators at the course, program, and institutional levels that assist students as they progress through a higher education institution. The study found a variety of individualized learning practices are utilized by faculty and administrators at the course, program and institutional levels …
School Leadership: Development Of An Evaluation Instrument And Process For Administrators, Kathy L. Mccormick
School Leadership: Development Of An Evaluation Instrument And Process For Administrators, Kathy L. Mccormick
Theses and Dissertations
This action research study was conducted for purposes of changing the formal evaluation for school administrators to one constructed around the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) 2008 standards, inclusive of multifaceted components aimed to increase the active participation of both the evaluator and the individual being evaluated. The previous instrument assessed leaders' performance on a set of generic indicators. There were no requirements for pre-evaluation conferences, nor did the school leader have formal opportunity for self-reflection. Outcomes were not linked to district goals, to individual or district professional growth plans, nor to standards or criteria-based process of leadership assessment. …
The Use Of Personal Digital Assistants In The K-8 Classrooms, Tracy A. Brosovich
The Use Of Personal Digital Assistants In The K-8 Classrooms, Tracy A. Brosovich
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) are being used in the K-8 classrooms and if so to what extent. By way of a stratified random sample, four counties in central and southern New Jersey were selected. A survey was developed and sent to the participating districts. Two hundred seventy-five surveys were mailed to eight districts, with a return rate of sixty-eight percent (68%).
Data was collected from the surveys and calculated into percentages. Although seventy-two percent (72%) of the respondents report using some form of technology on a daily basis, only three percent …
