The Effectiveness Of Pbis For Students Who Have Behavior Interventions Plans, Valeria Shaunta Fortune-Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) on students with Behavior Intervention Plans. This study used qualitative research methods to obtain the perspectives of teachers who had implemented PBIS on students with behavior plans. The study relied on semi-structured interviews using questions established by the researcher. The results of the study indicate that most of the teachers interviewed feel that PBIS is effective for students with PBIS because it acts as a motivational tool, gives students something to work towards, decreases negative behaviors, and increases positive behaviors. Additionally, the study indicates that …
Leadership And “Followership”: Do Department Chairs Actually Have “Followers”?, Jeff Buller
Leadership And “Followership”: Do Department Chairs Actually Have “Followers”?, Jeff Buller
Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
There is a paradox in higher education: Everyone agrees that good, creative leadership is essential … but no one wants to be led. Most books on leadership or management discuss a leader's "followers" or use some other expression (such as team members, direct reports, or associates) that appears to suggest a different sort of relationship but, when examined carefully, is really just a euphemism for followers. The chair role in higher education is distinctive, however, in that, although it includes supervisory aspects, the members of our departments are also our colleagues. So, how do you lead when you don't really …

New Way To Be A Chair Via Distributed Shared Model, Dennis Anderson
New Way To Be A Chair Via Distributed Shared Model, Dennis Anderson
Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings
Being a chair in today's higher education is more stressful due to various issues related to enrollment, administration demands, and limited and shrinking resources. Chairs have to manage and juggle demands from all stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, and administration. This presentation is about how to meet these challenges by creating a shared management system that enables and empowers faculty in the department by giving them portfolios. This model moves away from chair centric model that one person holds all decision making power by controlling resources. Since my department moved to shared distributed chair model, the department productivity is higher …
Chapter 1: The Merits Of A Chief Diversity Officer (Cdo): Enterprise Training Program Strategy, Abeni El-Amin Ph.D.
Chapter 1: The Merits Of A Chief Diversity Officer (Cdo): Enterprise Training Program Strategy, Abeni El-Amin Ph.D.
Management Faculty Publications
Developing an enterprise training program requires a commitment to cultivating diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) organizational initiatives while providing alignment to the organizational mission, vision, and ethos. With this knowledge, enterprise training programs benefit organizations by fostering authentic cultures to resolve persistent issues of bias, implicit bias, and offenses of corporate policies. As a value, organizational leadership must lead and champion diversity initiatives to ensure stakeholders understand the importance of complying with organizational policies. The problem is that effective DEIB initiatives need implementation or an overhaul. Institutional DEIB initiatives fail because they have yet to identify the rationale for …

Chapter 14: Strategies For Mitigating Bias In Training And Development, Quinton L. Marks, Bilal El-Amin, Abeni El-Amin Ph.D.
Management Faculty Publications
This chapter will examine the importance of mitigating bias in training and development, which provides internal and external scanning, thus mitigating bias in selection, promotion, compensation, information sharing, and implicit biases. Further, bias in training and development arises when training participants are intentionally or unintentionally targeted because of individual aspects of the “Big 8,†consisting of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, religion/spirituality, nationality, and socioeconomic status. Akin to research, information bias results from misleading training participants by providing incomplete information or showing imaging that is not representative of a diverse group of people. Additionally, DEIB training and development …
Chapter 13: Reconceptualizing Diversity Training Predictors Of Training Success, Shakoor Ward, Abeni El-Amin Ph.D.
Chapter 13: Reconceptualizing Diversity Training Predictors Of Training Success, Shakoor Ward, Abeni El-Amin Ph.D.
Management Faculty Publications
The results of in-depth meta-analyses of diversity training outcomes reveal that cognitive learning is the strongest effect from diversity training, while smaller effects were behavioral and attitudinal change. Further results of the analysis suggest that successful diversity training occurs when learning is the goal, not impact from behavior or attitude changes. An adapted version of The Kirkpatrick Training and Evaluation Model is highlighted to demonstrate how to design an evaluation that measures actual learning, rather than perceived learning. In addition, the Plus/Delta feedback tool is introduced as an effective evaluation tool to identify what is going well and what needs …
Preface: Implementing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, And Belonging In Educational Management Practices, Abeni El-Amin Ph.D.
Preface: Implementing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, And Belonging In Educational Management Practices, Abeni El-Amin Ph.D.
Management Faculty Publications
The social and political changes of this era have created a fundamental shift in how businesses view the impact of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in the workplace. Successful businesses are now achieved by incorporating DEIB initiatives and managing inclusive workforces. Thus, it is imperative to understand how leaders implement DEIB educational change initiatives as well as how they make significant, sustainable changes by utilizing communication abilities, conflict management skills, and servant leadership. Simultaneously, educational stakeholders must vet essential change management processes and principles.

This research provides an analysis of Kentucky State University's (KSU) Athletic Departmental Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) training series based on Wolfe's leadership competencies. Utilizing Wolfe's competencies of leaders profile to measure DEIB training effectiveness provided a framework to evaluate the program. Wolfe's four domains are Domain 1: Vision, Values, and Culture; Domain 2: Personal Skills, Mindsets, and Values; Domain 3: Capacity Building for Innovation and Continuous Improvement; and Domain 4: Shared Responsibility and Structures for Continuous Improvement, Innovation, and Assessment. It was found that leaders must focus on the internal complexities of leadership and organizational development, as well …

Leader Labeling Of Employees Within Organizations: Descriptions, Daily Patterns, And Contextual Factors, Erin B. Lunday
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
This study explored how formally assigned, organizational leaders perceive their employees using an explanatory sequential mixed-method approach. Applying the tropes associated with labeling theory (i.e., the perceptual frame within the labeling process) and positive organizational elements (i.e., positive deviance and positive leadership), the research determined what potential labels leaders assign to employees they supervise, examined the degree to which self-assessed positive leaders assign more positive descriptors, and identified contextual factors that influence the leaders’ labeling process. As part of an eligibility process for the study, leaders completed a positive leader self-assessment (n = 62), of which a sample (n = …

A Phenomenological Study Of The Role Of Institutional Debt In The Mid-America Region Of Acsi, John Robert Beck
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to inductively explore and understand how school leadership’s views on institutional debt impacted its use at Christian kindergarten-twelfth grade (K-12) schools in the Mid-America Region of the Association of Christian Schools International (MAR-ACSI). Institutional debt was generally defined as large and reoccurring expenses such as mortgages for school buildings. The qualitative research theory guiding this study was transcendental phenomenological reduction articulated by Clark Moustakas (1994) in his Phenomenological Research Methods. The Moustakas model provided an effective way to explore the gap in the literature found about how institutional debt impacted the planning and …

The Lived Experience Of Healthcare Leadership Dyads: Perceptions Of Agency, Susan Murphy Campanelli
All Theses And Dissertations
Healthcare leadership is evolving in response to recommendations from the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI). Physicians and administrators are partnering to form leadership dyads. These leadership dyads are focusing on improving healthcare quality, decreasing costs, and improving access. Existing literature on healthcare dyads explores leadership training needs for physicians, focuses on the differences between physicians and administrators, and emphasizes the need to develop role clarity for dyad leaders. There is a lack of empirical literature exploring how the physician and the administrator develop into a leadership team and extend shared leadership into their organization.
This phenomenological study applies Bandura’s (1986) …

It's A Dangerous World In There: Leadership Methods And Actions Of School Administrators During Emergency Situations And Times Of Crisis, James J. Drake
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Over the past twenty years, shootings and other violent incidents, acts of terrorism such as the attacks of September 11, 2001, and natural disaster events such as hurricanes or floods have occurred with increasing frequency. Situations like these pose significant challenges for school administrators when a normally-peaceful educational environment is quickly transformed by significant acts of aggression from within, or by external threats that impact the educational domain with little or no advance warning.
Contingency-based, situational leadership has proven to be effective when used in both educational and non-educational settings during normal, non-emergency periods. The purpose of this study is …
