The Role Of School And District Leaders In Discipline Systems In Positive Outlier High Schools, Catherine E. Guthrie

Using secondary data from a NY Kids comparative case study conducted in 2017-2018 of two positive outlier high schools, the purpose of this dissertation was to learn more about their discipline practices and the role secondary school leaders play in shaping those discipline systems. Two positive outlier high schools were studied, as they were identified as achieving better than expected graduation outcomes for youth of color, but also have proportionate, or close to proportionate, rates of exclusionary discipline for the same population of students. Higher education in the United States is in the midst of a crisis. Many administrators and faculty are grappling with the question, “what is the purpose of a college education?” In an attempt to resolve this crisis, some education leaders and policy makers have turned to false idols. They embraced student learning outcomes and quantifiable measurement metrics to justify the university’s raison d’etre. This occurred at the same time as institutions abandoned their religious heritage, they incidentally threw away moral elements as well.

An Exploratory Study Of The Impact Of College Student Leadership Programs Upon The Construct Of Mindfulness, Richard Lee Horowitz

Mindfulness is a key skill that produces the greater psychological awareness identified by most leadership scholars as being essential to effective leadership. This study conducted an exploratory assessment of the effectiveness of mindfulness-based cocurricular collegiate leadership programs through pre- and post-participation application of the Kentucky Inventory of Mindfulness Skills (KIMS). The Social Change Model (SCM) of leadership development was used to represent mindfulness-based leadership programs due to an emphasis upon mindfulness and psychological self awareness. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of various intensity levels of athletic participation on academic and leadership performance in a selective institution. For the purpose of this study a retrospective analysis of existing admissions and student performance data was conducted. The continuous dependent variables were academic and leadership performance scores. The categorical independent variables were the three intensity levels of athletic participation (high commitment athletes, moderate commitment athletes, general population students), gender and race. The subjects for this study included 4977 of the 4998 students that graduated from a selective institution from 1992 through 1996. Results …
