First Things First: Writing Strategies- Adages To Guide The Writing Adventure, Marilyn L. Grady

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

A book title attracted my attention as I rummaged through a new, offbeat bookstore. The book, Writing to Change the World, is written by the author of Reviving Ophelia, Mary Pipher. For those who have embraced the dis- cussion of social justice issues at recent academic conferences, the book of- fers the perspective of an author who has written extensively and successfully about social justice issues.

My "take aways" from the book, however, were in the chapters that of- fered reminders of the serious work of writing and the insights of well-known writers. Following are some comments from Pipher.

Pipher …

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

In the early 1970's, I was one of the youngest coaches in The Ohio State University Athletic Department. It was October 1972 when I took 26 women on the OSU Track team to compete in South Carolina. It is a night I won't ever forget. After the competition we walked into a restaurant for dinner at 6:30pm. Most of us had eaten when we walked out at 7:00 P.M. without paying the bill-because they refused to serve my Black athletes. Three important things happened that night. First, I received instant respect from my track team that night and for many …

Two days in San Diego were a memorable learning opportunity for me. On a Thursday, my daughter Elizabeth and I stood and watched about 579 young men run around a parade field at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. We were treated to the same individuals marching around the parade field in their spiffy uniforms. Later, we had some audience rehearsal of how to respond to a variety of orders. This was a particularly useful set of drills since the group needed extensive practice in screaming, volume enhance- ment, and understanding what the orders were. Younger group members seemed to be …

Opinions Of Female Juvenile Delinquents On Language-Based Literacy Activities, Dixie Sanger, Mitzi Ritzman, Aliza Stremlau, Lindsey Fairchild, Cindy Brunken

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

A mixed methods study was conducted to examine female juvenile delinquents' opinions and reactions on nine language-based literacy activities. Forty-one participants ranging in age from 13 to 18 years responded to a survey consisting of nine multiple-choice items and one open-ended question concerning the use- fulness of activities. Quantitative and qualitative findings revealed the majority of participants found the activities to be very useful. From 410 comments, five key themes emerged on positive opinions about usefulness, personal examples of use, negative opinions about usefulness, metacognitive and self regulation skills, and predictions of usefulness with future students. Examples of all activi- …

Biography Of Joan Wint: A Principal Whose Leadership For Social Justice Transformed A Rural Jamaican High School, Jacqueline Dram-Sterling

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This biographical study features the leadership of Joan Miller Wint, now re- tired, who for 23 years was principal of Denbigh High School, located in a high-poverty rural area in Jamaica. In the article I examine biography as a qualitative research strategy used in "telling" the stories of women leaders; explore the influence of Wint's early life and education on her leadership; highlight the challenges Wint encountered as a principal, as well as how she transformed the school from low-performing to high-performing; and dis- cuss Wint's story in terms of the themes in the scholarship on women's leadership.

First Things First: Writing Strategies, Marilyn Grady

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Professors as Writers: A Self-Help Guide to Productive Writing is a useful book for those seeking to unravel their writing challenges. The introduc- tory chapter is a scholarly treatment of writing, the subsequent chapters are hands-on examples and strategies for diagnosis and remediation of writing challenges. The author provides a mirror for anyone who is struggling with the craft of writing.

For those who work with doctoral students, the book is an excellent teaching tool. Often we assume that students coming to the doctoral experi- ence have sufficient skill for the task of writing the dissertation. Unfortu- nately, many students …

Perceptions Of Leadership Behaviors By Female Principals In North Caroline, Cheryl Mcfadden, Cathy Maahs-Fladung, Susan Beck-Frazier, Kermit Bruckner

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This study was designed to investigate whether significant differences exist among the perceptions of leadership behaviors of female principals in North Carolina using Bolman and Deal's (1984) four frames (structural, human re- source, political, and symbolic) for analysis. Participants consisted of 1,245 fe- male principals from elementary, middle, and secondary public schools in North Carolina. The researchers collected 525 responses for a 53% response rate. Overall, female principals in North Carolina perceive that they use multiple frame perspectives in their leadership behaviors. Furthermore, results indicate that age, parental status, and years in current position made a difference in the number …

Book Review Of On Becoming A Woman Leader: Learning From The Experiences Of University Presidents & Women At The Top: What Women University And College Presidents Say About Effective Leadership, Catherine L. Morgan

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Readers who enjoy learning about women who are successful leaders in higher education have two more books to add to their libraries. The authors of these two books had similar motivations for their research and subse- quent publications. Their research methodologies were similar in that both works are based on qualitative studies of women college and university presidents. The analysis and synthesis ofthe information gleaned from the studies, and the presentation of that information, differ in ways that make for interesting comparisons.

The subtitles of each book provide clues as to the motivations behind the research. Madsen wants us to …

Ethical Leadership: What Does It Look Like?, Laura E. Schulte Jul 2009

Ethical Leadership: What Does It Look Like?, Laura E. Schulte

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This article focuses on the development and validation of the Ethical Leadership Index (ELI). The development and validation processes included: adopting a framework; developing items; providing evidence of content validity; conduct- ing a pilot study; and analyzing data to provide evidence of construct validity and reliability estimates. Five ethical principles that are mentioned in leadership models, theories, and approaches served as the framework for the ELI. They in- clude respect for autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice, and fidelity. The results of the study indicate that the ELI is a psychometrically sound instru- ment, which warrants its use in leadership programs and …

Women Superintendents In Illinois: Gender Barriers And Challenges, Vicki L. Vantuyle, Sandra G. Watkins Dr.

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Women face unique challenges as superintendents. This study determined barri- ers women face as superintendents and elicited reasons why these women would consider leaving the superintendent's position. Thirty-nine PreK-12 women su- perintendents in Illinois participated in a web-based survey in January 2008. Survey items included information regarding characteristics, pathways to the superintendency, personal barriers, professional barriers, and factors that would cause women to consider leaving the superintendency. Respondents identified familial responsibilities, gender discrimination, employment opportunities, and self-confidence as major barriers. Factors that would cause women superinten- dents to leave their position included employment opportunities, familial re- sponsibilities, and peer support. …

Race, Gender, And School Leadership In A State With Shifting Student Demographics, Liz Hollingworth, David Dude Jul 2009

Race, Gender, And School Leadership In A State With Shifting Student Demographics, Liz Hollingworth, David Dude

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This is an analysis of equity in Iowa educational leadership from the 1978-1979 school year through 2007-2008, and the extent to which rapidly changing stu- dent racial demographics are reflected in the schools. We found that male princi- pals continue to outnumber women 6: 1 in rural districts, but in urban schools the rate is closer to 1: 1. Female superintendents are now paid statistically the same as men, but women in every other educational position make on average less money than men. The data also reveal that the race of Iowa educators has not shifted to reflect the increasingly …

Voices Of Women In The Field- The Midwest Women's Leadership Institute- Responding To A Call To Lead, Jean M. Haar

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Much like other women I know, I have been more hesitant and cautious in responding to a call to lead than I care to admit. I have, however, been blessed with strong supporters and mentors. And, I have been provided with relevant leadership opportunities. Because of the support and experi- ences, I have finally arrived at a point in my career where I am not only anx- ious to lead but am also anxious to encourage other women to lead. I had my first real tangible opportunity to provide encouragement to others through the implementation of the Midwest Women's Leadership …

A Breath Of Spring Air, Marilyn Grady

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

The most promising sights of spring in Nebraska this year were two confer- ences for women. One event, sponsored by Metropolitan Community Col- lege in Omaha, was a Women's History Month Tea. The program featured a Native American woman who greeted the guests with a Native invocation. Dressed traditionally and speaking in a native language, her presentation was both provocative and beautiful. She was followed by a noted actress from Nebraska who presented brief glimpses of the lives offourwomen from vari- ous historic moments in U.S. history. As always, her characterizations are riveting. Participants were invited to eat the finger …

Female Middle School Principals' Voices: Implications For School Leadership Preparation, Cathy Jones, Martha N. Ovando, Cynthia High

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This study was an attempt to add the voices of women to the discourse of sch.ool leadership. It focused on the nature of the middle school leadership experiences of three female middle school principals, their social interactions based on gen- der role expectations and their own leadership perspectives. Findings suggest that middle school leadership is characterized as challenging and sacrificial, that participants initially deny the effect of gender on their performance, but that so- cial stereotypes influence people's perceptions about female principals, and that they tend to be more collaborative and nurturing than their male counterparts. Further, servant leadership and …

Women And Tenure: Closing The Gap, Anne M. Schoening

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Women in 2009 are earning advanced degrees in record numbers, yet they are shying away from careers in higher education. The demands of motherhood, coupled with a lack of family friendly policies in the academic workplace make life in the academy less desirable for a new generation of female scholars. The purpose of this article is to explore the reasons behind the low numbers of ten- ured female faculty in American higher education and to propose strategies for reversing this trend. Specific suggestions for improving the collegiate work en- vironment for women at the individual, department, and institutional levels are …

Book Review Of Hope's Boy: A Memoir & The Women Who Raised Me: A Memoir, John Palladino, Mark A. Giesler

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

The preparation of preservice administrators and teachers poses daunting challenges for the academy. Federal mandates associated with the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and the pressure on school districts to produce high-perform- ing students despite inadequate financial resources, have shifted public ed- ucation's focus towards youth's academic proficiency. The linear focus has trumped the nurturing role school personnel could and should fulfill in ad- dition to scholastic achievement.

Foster care youth, in particular, validate the need for educational leaders who can nurture the overall emotional well-being of vulnerable children. The blase …

Those Who Point The Way, Marilyn Grady

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Emily Carr (1871-1945) is described as one of British Columbia's most re- nowned artists. I became aware of her work on a recent visit to Vancouver. Her paintings are a main feature of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

In reading the description of her work and a bit of her biography, I was struck by her accomplishments, her stature as an artist and a writer, and her career path. She was a painter for many years and received no support or en- couragement for her painting. At the age of 42, she apparently abandoned painting and turned instead to a variety …

Women In History -- Madame C. J. Walker 1867-1919, Germaine W. Huber

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Madame C.J. Walker's name has been synonymous with black hair and hair care products and until I began to research her life for this report, I believed that this was her major claim to fame. I found I greatly underestimated the contributions to African American and American history this extraordinary woman made. "I am a woman who came from the cotton fields of the South. From there I was promoted to the washtub. From there I was promoted to the cook kitchen. And from there I promoted myself into the business of manufacturing hair goods and preparations ... I have …

Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862-1931) is a fine example of the voice a writer has. Born in Holly Springs, Mississippi, she was born into slavery. Her par- ents died of yellow fever when she was young. As a result, she became the head of her family and took a teaching position near her home to support the family. She moved to Memphis in 1881 because there were more teaching jobs there (Myers, 2008).

Women Of Color School Leaders: Leadership School Should Not Ignore, Jean Haar, Jerry Robicheau Jan 2009

Women Of Color School Leaders: Leadership School Should Not Ignore, Jean Haar, Jerry Robicheau

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

School districts are faced with challenges resulting from the changing demo- graphics of the student population. Consequently, school districts are creat- ing positive, multicultural learning environments. School districts intent on establishing multicultural learning environments should consider the contri- butions people of color, specifically women of color can make in leading the endeavor. This study highlights the insights and experiences of three women of color school leaders. Their stories demonstrate how leadership from women of color contributes to the development of positive, multicultural learning environments. Their stories provide insight for school districts as they seek effective leadership for their schools and …

Voices Of Women In The Field- To Everything There Is A Season, Nancy G. Howell Jan 2009

Voices Of Women In The Field- To Everything There Is A Season, Nancy G. Howell

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

My pathway to leadership has been long and winding and I have, at times, approached that path hesitantly and with trepidation. I, like many women of my generation, did not visualize myself as a leader in my younger years. I believed that because I was basically shy and introverted, I would never possess the qualities that I believed were necessary for leadership. In the 1950s of my childhood, leaders were men, with few exceptions. At least, those people officially designated as leaders in that society were men. It has only been through experience, maturity and education that I have recog- …

Women In History- Madame C.J. Walker 1867-1919, Germaine W. Huber

"I have to cancel my hair appointment!" This is a lament I've heard and voiced many times, and not one to be taken lightly. The relationship between women and their beauticians is as important as that of a marriage, especially for women of color. Madame C.J. Walker's name has been synonymous with black and hair care products and until I began to research her life for this report, I believed that this was her major claim to fame. I found I greatly underestimated the contributions to African American and American history the extraordinary women made.

Creative Maladjustment: Engaging Personal Narrative To Teach Diversity And Social Justice, Ilene L. Ingram

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

We all have stories-beautiful and ugly stories-neat ending and never ending stories. When personal narratives, the stories that come closest to the human ex- perience, are used as pedagogy, they can be windows offering views of different worlds and people. In this way, personal narratives become lanterns that illumi- nate the real and imagined fences that divide us as human beings. The intention of this article is to give an account of both how and why I use personal narrative as a pedagogical method to teach diversity and social justice.

The European Perspective On Women's Leadership, Hildegard Macha, Quirin J. Bauer

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

The perspective of women in leadership positions is of particular impor- tance in Europe. It is a main subject in the areas of research and science. For example: At the University of Augsburg we conducted several studies of women's leadership and the female academic career in view of gender is- sues such as gender within the family and in socialization. Furthermore we accomplished two gender mainstreaming studies with the focus on equity in several universities in Germany (Gender mainstreaming is a European law of 1997 and a political strategy of diversity management).

In this article we want to show the …
