The University of Maine's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences was established in 1996 as part of University of Maine restructuring, with Rebecca E. Eilers as its first dean. The College merged departments from the Colleges of Arts and Humanities and College of Sciences. The College of Arts and Humanities had become into being as an separate entity from the former College of Arts and Sciences on July 1, 1989 under the leadership of acting dean Edward B. Laverty.
