Measuring Interest In Mathematics, P Gardner, Siek Toon Khoo
Dr Siek Toon Khoo
This paper reports on the development of instruments for measuring secondary school student interests in mathematics. Interest in mathematics is regarded as having three components (topics, activities and motives), each with several dimensions. Nearly all instruments employed summated ratings (Likert) procedures, but one adopted an unusual procedure, based on Zuckerman's (1960) Affect Adjective Checklist. Six instruments were developed altogether: IMT (interest in various mathematical topics), ILA (interest in learning activities), MCI (mathematics related career inventory), NMI (nature of motives inventory), GIM (general interest in mathematics) and AAC (affect adjective checklist). The IMT instrument, containing seven scales, was developed to measure …
Secondary School Size, Operating Costs And Curriculum Structure, Phil Mckenzie
Secondary School Size, Operating Costs And Curriculum Structure, Phil Mckenzie
Dr Phillip McKenzie
Proponents of increases in average school size commonly employ two main arguments: bigger schools are less expensive to operate than small schools, and they are better able to meet students' educational needs through the provision of more extensive curricula. This paper examines these arguments in the case of Victorian government secondary schools, using data relating to the 1984 school year. It presents results which suggest that while size brings considerable advantages, plateau effects begin to appear at relatively low enrolment levels. The paper comprises five main sections: an outline of the conceptual background to the study; a description of the …

Special Educational Provision In The People's Republic Of China, Irving Epstein
Special Educational Provision In The People's Republic Of China, Irving Epstein
Irving Epstein
As the educational system within the People's Republic of China continues to develop and mature, schools offering specialised curricular and instructional alternatives to their ordinary counterparts will be called upon to play an increasingly important supportive role. While educational specialisation and diversification are currently at a nascent stage, a preliminary glimpse of the process allows us to form at the very least a first impression concerning the efficacy of modernisation efforts in educational terms. We can observe the extent to which issues concerning the uniqueness of curricular form and function are clearly articulated, and we can look for the formation …
