Teacher And Student Perspectives On Collaborative Learning, Ray Peck, M Barnes
Teacher And Student Perspectives On Collaborative Learning, Ray Peck, M Barnes
Ray Peck
In this article, the authors explain what they mean by collaborative learning and suggest ways of promoting effective collaboration in senior mathematics. Issues discussed include group composition, the design of suitable tasks for collaborative work, setting norms for student behaviour and the teacher's role in promoting effective discussion. Students' views on collaborative learning are also presented. Perceived advantages include improved understanding, enjoyment and communication skills. Some perceived disadvantages and ways of minimising them are also discussed.

Graphics Calculators In Victorian Secondary Schools: Teacher Perceptions Of Use, Alla Routitsky
Dr Alla Routitsky
Since Victoria permitted the use of graphics calculators in final external examinations, their use has become quite widespread. A survey of secondary schools undertaken to gauge the response of teachers to these tools, provides information on how teachers view graphics calculator use in secondary mathematics courses.

Broadening Assessment, Improving Fairness? Some Examples From School Science, Jan Lokan, Ray Adams, Brian Doig
Prof Ray Adams
Following a review of equity issues in testing, especially in relation to science, two assessment programmes in school science, each of which was designed both to probe a range of aspects of student performance and for use in a large-scale study, are discussed. Both have been developed and used in the 1990s, one is Australia only and the other in many countries. The programmes and the range of aspects they attempt to assess are described and results are cited for several groups of students. Issues of fairness through broadening of large-scale assessments to include tasks requiring students to construct their …

The Convergent Validity Of Reading Assessments At The Secondary Level (Thesis), Kelly Cross
The Convergent Validity Of Reading Assessments At The Secondary Level (Thesis), Kelly Cross
Kelly L. Cross
This study compares the results of four secondary level reading assessments in order to determine their convergent validity. Convergent validity is the process or result of finding that two or more indicators thought to assess the same variable correlate with each other (Harris & Hodges, 1995). During my examination of reading assessments, I found that four types: standardized reading tests, informal reading inventories, cloze technique reading assessments, and oral reading accuracy analysis from authentic materials. This study compares the results of these different types of reading assessments, rather than evaluating which "brand" of the same type of reading assessment is …
Street Children In Film, Irving Epstein
Street Children In Film, Irving Epstein
Irving Epstein
In examining the depiction of street children in three classic films: Kids, Pixote, and Salaam Bombay, I argue that the respective directors play upon our protean concepts of “the street” and “the child” in order to offer social criticism of three types of states: the consumerist state, the authoritarian state, and the neocolonialist state. In each film, street life is used as a metaphor for the way in which the state expresses its authority. In spite of their differences, the directors’ share gendered views of children and childhood innocence, and see the street as offering its inhabitants the opportunities for …

Assessing Principals' Interpersonal Behaviour With Their Teachers, John Cresswell, D Fisher
Assessing Principals' Interpersonal Behaviour With Their Teachers, John Cresswell, D Fisher
Dr John Cresswell
In the past 25 years much attention has been given to the development and use of instruments to assess the qualities of the classroom and school environment from the perspectives of students and teachers. This paper describes the development, validation and application of an instrument, the Principal Interaction Questionnaire, to measure principals' interpersonal behaviour in a school. The new instrument was based on the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction, first devised in The Netherlands. It contains eight scales to measure various aspects of a principal's interpersonal behaviour such as Directive behaviour, Strict/Inflexible behaviour and Understanding behaviour. The questionnaire was sent to …
