Reaching Their Potential : What's Working With Indigenous Students, Jenny Wilkinson

What is working with Indigenous students and what can teachers and principals do to help right now? Plenty. The author outlines a program from the Indigenous Education Leadership Institute (IELI), a partnership between Education Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology. The IELI runs the five-day Stronger, Smarter Leadership Program, which aims to transform Indigenous educational outcomes, challenge mindsets, accountabilities and responsibilities, and pedagogy for improved outcomes. Participants have to return six weeks later for two days and present their proposals for change and outline what they done so far. Summaries of two major recent research reports into teachers’ workload and teachers’ work practices will be presented in this session: Secondary Teacher Workload Study and Primary (Elementary) Teacher Work Study. The research was carried out by the Australian Council for Educational Research for the New Zealand Ministry of Education. The purpose of the studies was to gain an understanding of the nature and patterns of teachers’ work, to explore practical and innovative ways in which teachers manage their work and to determine what factors cause work pressure for them.
