In 2004 the Individuals Education with Disabilities Act (IDEA) provided a directive that public agencies needed to educate children with disabilities alongside children who do not have a disability. This needed to occur in the least restrictive environment possible. The purpose of this was to allow students with disabilities to be in the general education classroom as much as possible because when students are pulled out of class they are missing academics and social opportunities with their peers.
