In this session, participants will discuss successful (and maybe not so successful) faculty development programs and activities. We will provide participants with some examples of building relationships with faculty early on, and how to demonstrate to faculty that the grants/sponsored programs offices are on “their” side. We will also discuss and share ideas of celebrating faculty scholarship, proposal submission and external awards.

This paper examines the lessons learned from implementing an academic service learning project using a wiki to foster mentoring opportunities for at-risk students from two educational institutions. Students on freshmen probation at a university mentored down to at-risk students at a high school about making the transition to university life and academics. In a reciprocal relationship, the at-risk high school students in a career preparation class “mentored up” to the university students about employability skills. Recent changes in U.S. travel regulations now allow for short-term study abroad in Cuba. However, planning and leading Faculty-Led Study Abroad programs in Cuba present certain challenges not encountered in other programs. In this presentation I discuss current U.S. regulations regarding educational travel to Cuba, as well as the particular challenges that I faced in leading two successful Faculty-Led Study Abroad programs in Cuba, including recruiting, budget and finances, travel arrangements, on-site logistics, and safety.
