Learning In The Light Of Freedom: The Mississippi Freedom Schools Of 1964, Emma E. Appleton
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
This paper investigates the “freedom schools” of the Mississippi Freedom Summer Project of 1964. It argues through a combination of a powerfully designed curriculum, the implementation of student-centered pedagogy, and a focus on relationship building and personal efficacy, freedom school students were given the skills and confidence needed to become young leaders in their communities and bring change to Mississippi. Through this paper, I hope to encourage current educators apply freedom school principles and practices in their own classrooms to inspire our students in the same way.

This lesson plan explores the lives of various people in Arkansas and the changes their lives went through at the beginning of the Reconstruction Era, and provides images of documents, transcriptions, and online links to primary and secondary resources focusing on the changing rights, racial tensions, and the elections in 1868. Two articles about 1868 racial riots in Conway County, Arkansas, offer students the opportunity contrast varying interpretations of an event, examine how several days with additional information can change a story, and compare it to other race riots in Arkansas and around the world. It may interest your readers to know that the Federal Courts have already decided that campus gay organizations have the right to exist and to use the university facilities made available to any other group on campus. The relevant decisions involved the University of New Hampshire, University of Georgia and Oklahoma University. This is not the first time that the Courts in interpreting and enforcing the Bill of Rights have blazed a trail for those not so well-versed in Constitutional law nor well-traveled in the realm of liberty.
