African-Americans, women, and Native Americans all living together in an inclusive society, contributing to each other's knowledge of their individual cultures and diversity. From Duke to Stanford, and from UCLA to MIT to UW-Madison, a fire storm of debate has been ignited over the "politically correct" (or "PC") way to shape university policy on issues of racial, gender, academic and intellectual diversity. The so-called PC agenda on women's studies, ethnic studies, gay and lesbian issues, Eastern history, and the recruitment and retention of minority students and faculty has attracted considerable heat on may of our nation;s compuses - even though PC-ism occupies the attention of just a small miniority of individuals on both sides of the issue.

Last spring, students in a Child Development and Family Relations Research Methods class conducted a random survey among third- and fourth-year male students at the University of Maine to begin to determine the rate of sexual harassment on campus and the men's perceptions of sexual harassment. The 14-women who designated the survey were well-versed in the liturature concerning sexual harassment. All of them had first-hand knowledge of harassmenet.

Angela Davis, an internationally recognized author, scholar, and human rights activist, arrived late Wednesday night to the University of Maine's Memorial Gym, but the half hour delay was well worth the wait. Racism, repression and hate-violence were among the major subjcts Davis discussed, including the alledged racial attack in February against UMaine students Quester Hannah and Aaron Phillips.

I grew up in a small town in Maine, right outside of Bangor. Like most towns in Maine, it was very homophobic. My experience of being gay is defined by that and one other thing, the murder of Charlie Howard. This opinion piece is accompanied by an editorial cartoon by S.
