The penalties levied by the University of Maine against a student accused of issuing a violent threat on FirstClass [the University's email system] have been set, but an investigation by UMaine's Public Safety continues. Casey Belanger, 19, of Caribou, has been ordered by UMaine to serve 30 hours of community service over two semesters. The university has also suspended his FirstClass account and placed him on "probated suspension." The punishment sought by the state, however, is potentially more severe.

What a paradox! After likening fundamental preachers to such things as "two-bit Latin American dictators," "Theological perverts," religious witch hunters who merchandise the Gospel for profit and preach an "upside-down gospel" of fear and hatred and finally suggesting that we missed our true calling since we should be planting corn instead of preaching Christ, the Rev. They say what goes up must come down. The law of gravity was proven once again last weekend. Friday afternoon was a planned faculty meeting designed to vocalize encouragement and support of the trustees' stand upholding the rights of the club appeared as a singular vestige of hope amid repeated setbacks and disappointments.
