Many professions are increasingly emphasizing the role of reflection, encouraging educators to look for appropriate ways to help students engage in reflective practice during their professional preparation. Journal writing is an insightful and powerful instructional technology utilizing strategies that foster understanding and the application of concepts, enhance critical thinking, improve achievement and attitude, encourage student reflection and capture changes in students' perception. Examples from three different professional preparation courses illustrate the power of journal-writing activities as a way of encouraging students' reflective thinking, and giving faculty a way to assess students' reflective practice and perceptual changes. Cultural Capital—Now You See It, Now You Don’T: Using Race To Unpack Systemic Class Differences, Leslie Martin

The article focuses on the discussion of the African American Vernacular English (AAVE) as one method to bridge the cultural gap among the students in the U.S. The cultural differences among students have been observed to affect their schooling experience. It provides an analysis of the AAVE as a form of cultural capital which promotes respect on the languages and dialects of the students.

Middle school is a paradox. Students want nothing more than autonomy, while classrooms become more structured and demanding. This paper presents a way to use university students as near peer role models and student leaders for a weekend English camp experience for a small group of high school students. It explores the basic design for the project, and outlines the rationale for the syllabus for preparing the near peer role models in a semester conversation class at a Japanese university. It details each of the activities used during the English camp experience, and shares reflections from the participants on the community experience.
