Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
In June of 2020 in response to the murder of George Floyd and the additional atrocities against historically marginalized people and communities across the United States, the Commission on Education (COE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) sought to act within its scope. A retrospective survey (N= 1,692) was developed, deployed, and analyzed in accordance with the COE’s standard operating procedures relating specifically to monitoring trends that impact the education of occupational therapy (OT) and occupational therapy assistant (OTA) students. This survey aimed to capture perspectives from OT/OTA students regarding the delivery of culturally aware educational content in curricula …
Teaching Innovation Learned From The 2022 Amte Conference: Prepare Future Mathematics Educators, Yi-Jung Lee
Teaching Innovation Learned From The 2022 Amte Conference: Prepare Future Mathematics Educators, Yi-Jung Lee
TFSC Publications and Presentations
The role of mathematics has transformed from gatekeeper to launchpad in K-12 schools and been considered as a critical factor in career readiness in a diverse society (CDE, 2022). Therefore, teacher education programs must adopt effective teaching approaches with cultural awareness while preparing future mathematics teachers. I shared a revised teaching design framework (Rhodes, 2021) along with the Culturally Responsive Mathematical Modeling perspectives to help educators integrate a) productive disposition, b) the instructional design with modeling tasks, and c) equity-minded practice into their teaching preparation and practices.
A Training Intervention For Middle School Teachers On Culturally Relevant Instruction And Culturally Relevant Classroom Management Strategies, Vivian Yakpo Newton
A Training Intervention For Middle School Teachers On Culturally Relevant Instruction And Culturally Relevant Classroom Management Strategies, Vivian Yakpo Newton
Theses and Dissertations
This applied dissertation was designed to determine the effectiveness of the Middle School Teacher Training Intervention on the application of culturally relevant instruction and classroom management instructions by teachers in a Title I middle school in the southeastern United States. This school lacked culturally relevant instruction and behavior management, despite its teachers having undergone the training program. It also had significant identifiable gaps in the academic achievement of its students, which raised questions about the efficacy and inclusivity in its educational environment. The lack of cultural competence of middle school teachers and administrators contributes to the suboptimal performance of students …
Self-Reflection Among Teachers Of Culturally Diverse Learners: An Intervention Study Exploring The Influence Of Cultural Identity, Susan A. Dube
Self-Reflection Among Teachers Of Culturally Diverse Learners: An Intervention Study Exploring The Influence Of Cultural Identity, Susan A. Dube
Theses and Dissertations
Student achievement is at the forefront of conversations related to education, yet culturally diverse learners continue to experience academic success much less than their White peers (Ajayi, 2011; Alviar-Martin & Ho, 2011; Aronson & Laughter, 2016; Ladson-Billings, 2009). Persistent gaps in achievement, graduation rates, and completion of college degrees indicate that educators need to reflect on how students from marginalized groups are prepared to participate in the global economy (Crouch, 2012; Ford & Moore, 2013; Frankenberg, 2009; Pennington, Brock & Ndura, 2012). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a structured intervention program would increase in-service teachers' racial …
Caricature And Hyperbole In Preservice Teacher Professional Development, Mica Pollock, Candice Bocala, Sherry L. Deckman, Shari Dickstein-Staub
Caricature And Hyperbole In Preservice Teacher Professional Development, Mica Pollock, Candice Bocala, Sherry L. Deckman, Shari Dickstein-Staub
Publications and Research
Professional development (PD) “for diversity” aims to prepare teachers to support students from varying backgrounds to succeed, often in underresourced contexts. Although many teachers invite such inquiry as part of learning to teach, others resist “diversity” inquiry as extra to teaching, saying they cannot “do it all.” In this article, we discuss how preservice teachers at times caricature the requests of PD for diversity, hearing the task as a call to undertake superhuman tasks and to be people other than who they are. We argue that these caricatures require direct acknowledgment by both preservice teachers and teacher educators working in …
Challenging, Eye-Opening, And Changing U.S. Teacher Training In Korea: Creating Experiences That Will Enhance Global Perspectives, Kevin Oh, Natalie Nussli
Challenging, Eye-Opening, And Changing U.S. Teacher Training In Korea: Creating Experiences That Will Enhance Global Perspectives, Kevin Oh, Natalie Nussli
School of Education Faculty Research
This case study explored the short-term international experience of preservice teachers to create and enhance global perspectives. These teachers (n=5), all female graduate students at a university in the U.S., were fully immersed in a foreign culture for three weeks while teaching English to primary and secondary students in Korea. Pre-, during-, and post-data were collected to investigate how the participants work and live while being completely immersed in a new culture. Eight themes emerged from the analysis of multiple qualitative instruments: (a) language barrier, (b) being the minority, (c) cultural differences and cultural shock, (d) student participation and teaching …

Urban Immersion: Working To Dispel The Myths Of Urban Schools And Preparing Teachers To Work With Diverse And Economically Disadvantaged Students, Connie Schaffer
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
This descriptive research investigated the impact of a unique program that partnered an urban K-12 school district and an urban university. The goals of the program were to dispel common misperceptions of urban K-12 schools and to prepare preservice teachers to teach in diverse school settings. The program provided an authentic teaching experience for 35 preservice teachers, completely immersing them and their university instructors in urban schools, working and learning side-by-side with the K-12 teachers and students. Initial results indicated the program was successful in achieving its goals. The program assisted in reframing how preservice teachers perceived urban teaching opportunities …
The Importance Of Cross-Cultural Training For The Tesol Teacher, Susan Ginsberg Emanuel
The Importance Of Cross-Cultural Training For The Tesol Teacher, Susan Ginsberg Emanuel
MA TESOL Collection
Preparation of teachers of ESOL only began some thirty years ago, but with the increased need for better qualified and trained teachers, it is necessary to examine the factors that will best allow the teacher to function overseas. Much research has gone into language acquisition and the effects of motivation on the learner. Culture shock and culture stress seem to be obvious areas of concern, yet very little real research has concentrated on this area. Examination of TESOL courses shows a tremendous lack in cultural awareness courses directed at coping with culture shock and stress. Further research needs to be …

Examining Values: A Comparative Cultures Course At Sit For Non-English Speakers, Ann L. Munch
MA TESOL Collection
This paper reports the Comparative Cultures section of a 10-week English course I taught at SIT the summer of 1973. Although the report is descriptive, its thrust is primarily instructive. Its purpose is to provide other teachers of Comparative Cultures some supplemental material. It includes my pedagogical approach to cultural awareness in the classroom, during the ten weeks, student involvement and reaction, and suggestions for adapting and improving the material.
