Examining Teachers’ School Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions And Support Practices To Improve The Behaviors Of Students With Disabilities, Lolita Michele Owens

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe problem at a high school in the southeastern United States is that students with disabilities struggle to demonstrate appropriate behaviors despite the implementation of School-Wide Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (SWPBIS). Current research findings have suggested that although SWPBIS includes strategies for students with disabilities, the behaviors of students with learning disabilities have not improved during SWPBIS implementation. There was a need to explore teachers’ implementation of SWPBIS for students with learning disabilities. In this basic qualitative study, how teachers at the research site high school were implementing SWPBIS for students with learning disabilities toward improving maladaptive behaviors was …

Mtss Implementation In High Schools: Expert And Stakeholder Perspectives, Julie Daye Jul 2019

Mtss Implementation In High Schools: Expert And Stakeholder Perspectives, Julie Daye

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the perspectives of experts and school-level stakeholders on MTSS implementation in high schools. Despite evidence of MTSS implementation effectiveness in elementary and middle school settings, MTSS implementation still lags in high schools. In reviewing the literature on high school MTSS implementation, those who have worked to implement MTSS do not all do so with the same priorities and/or emphases. I collected and examined qualitative data that reflects the perspectives of experts and school-level stakeholders. Specifically, I also reviewed articles or book chapters written by some high school MTSS experts and interviewed them. I interviewed stakeholders working in …

Positive School Culture: Facilitating Changes To Cultivate Learning And Change Perceptions, Melinda J. Mallinger

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are a variety of things to consider when facilitating changes to a school culture. First of all, it is important to understand the differences and nuances between school culture and climate. It is also imperative to understand the role of perspective in school culture. There are many variables in a school and acknowledging the various perspectives of students, teachers, administration, and parents, is important if a school is going to facilitate changes. A school must also consider the role of a specific behavior management program, in this case, Positive behavioral interventions and support (PBIS) and classroom environment. All of …

Voices Of The Implementers: The Perceptions And Experiences Of Educators Implementing Pbis, Jacqueline Nicole Freeman Jan 2018

Voices Of The Implementers: The Perceptions And Experiences Of Educators Implementing Pbis, Jacqueline Nicole Freeman

Education Dissertations and Projects

This qualitative research study was developed around the problem that teachers are resistant to change when implementing educational initiatives that are new to them. “Rather than blame teachers and ask, ‘Why do teachers resist?’ perhaps those of us who lead change should ask, ‘What can we do to make it easier for teachers to implement new practices’” (Knight, 2009, p. 508)? Research supports the need for district and school administrators to focus on strategies that positively impact change and develop successful initiation and implementation procedures. This study focused on the types of strategies identified by the teachers that facilitated and/or …

Improving Student Behavior Through The Use Of Greater Teacher Accountability Measures, Tequila S. Kurth

Dissertations

This change leadership plan examined the fidelity of implementation of strategies teachers learned during professional development at an elementary school in a large Midwestern urban school district. Emphasis was placed on the quality of teacher-student relationships as well as the strategies teachers used to address undesired behaviors. Also included were actions I took as an administrator with struggling teachers. While it was evident that in order to change student behaviors it would be necessary for teacher behaviors to change, making this change happen through greater teacher accountability measures proved to be challenging. Teacher resistance made it clear that the best …
