Deaf and hard of hearing children (hereafter DHH) frequently have delayed language and little experience with books because they do not share a common language with their hearing parents. However, there is little research concerning language and literacy development in the DHH classroom and equally little discussion of teacher responsibilities to address these issues. This study investigated the implementation of dialogic reading, which aims to engage students in active discussion and retellings of stories, using American Sign Language, called story signings. This qualitative multiple case study explored the identity development of three preservice teachers of literacy. The study focused on the prior knowledge of the preservice teachers of literacy and how their knowledge related to their identity development while in field experiences. The primary question that guided this study was: What is the nature of the construction of identity during field experiences for preservice teachers of literacy? Sub questions explored identity in field experiences and the role of prior pedagogical content knowledge to identity development.

Situated in a transactional paradigm, connections between the constructs of meaning and experience in both teacher education and reading in English education guided my construction of a theoretical framework called Classroom Literacy. This framework extends Rosenblatt's Transactional Theory of Reading (1978, 1994, 2005), broadens the concept of text to include the verbal and non-verbal communicative signs related to the context of the classroom, and positions teachers as "readers" of their classrooms as texts. This study helped to clarify the definition of reflection in the literature while also contributing to teacher education curricula. Eleven graduate students enrolled in an educational psychology graduate level course at a university in the northeast completed course assignments, entitled My Thoughts and Follow-Up Reflection (Dai, 2006). The purpose of these assignments was to scaffold and assess process reflection and premise reflection (Mezirow, 1991). The assignments focused on the analysis (My Thoughts) and reanalysis ( Follow-Up Reflection) of two problem-based cases, Mary Ewing and Sarah Hanover (Silverman, Welty, & Lyon, 1996).
