An institutional culture that values teaching is likely to lead to improved student learning. The main focus of this study was to determine faculty, graduate and undergraduate students’ perception of the teaching culture at their institution and identify indicators of that teaching culture. Themes included support for teaching development; support for best practices, innovative practices and specific effective behaviours; recognition of teaching; infrastructure; evaluation of teaching and implementing the student feedback received from teaching evaluations. The study contributes to a larger project examining the quality of institutional teaching culture.

The study using focus groups in the West African nation of The Gambia was an experiential research, which provided viable data on girl child education practices, problems and prospects in the African sub region. This paper presents an opportunity to explore peoples’ perceptions on issues of interest and concern to Gambians on girl child education. The 2006-2007 study was conducted through the use of focus groups for data collection, covering six educational regions in the Republic of The Gambia.

Looking For Evidence In The Teaching Of Mathematics, Ray Peck, A Bishop, S Bennett

The joint Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers AAMT/Monash University project 'Excellence in the teaching of mathematics: professional standards project' has been working with teacher focus groups in four states to try and build a picture of what mathematics teachers believe represents excellent teaching. This paper discusses the second aim of this project: to develop an assessment scheme and protocols for certifying this excellence. Topics discussed are developing ways to assess excellence, looking at an American model of assessment - the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), and other models for standards of excellence in teaching.
