Stations: Do They Affect Students' Learning In A Music Classroom?, Leighton Meyer
Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning
Students in a middle school band class were taught using traditional strategies the first three weeks of the study, then randomly placed into station groups for the final three weeks where they completed a variety of activities at different stations. Data was collected through assessment rubrics of the musical concepts, individual and focus group student interviews, along with a student opinion survey. The quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, displayed using pie charts and bar graphs, and the qualitative data was analyzed using the comparative method. This qualitative case study examined best practices in professional learning communities (PLCs) that influence teacher self-efficacy. Participants were primary and intermediate teachers and teacher leaders from a large suburban elementary school in Texas. Participants had to have at least 1 year of teaching and PLC experience. The semistructured teacher and teacher-leader interviews were recorded and transcribed in real time using Otter.ai software. After members checked the transcription, the transcription was uploaded into the NVivo software for coding and identifying common themes. Alternative certification programs (ACPs) recently gained popularity due to their brevity and appeal to second-career candidates. However, research shows that alternatively certified teachers often need more pedagogical skills than traditionally certified teachers, leading to the possibility of experiencing challenges their first year as an educator. The assessment of perceived stress and coping behaviors related to first-semester clinical might benefit students in nursing education. The assessment of most common coping behaviors and perceived stress related to the clinical setting is essential due to difference in personalities, learning abilities, and coping behaviors among nursing students today.
