Mathematics Education In The United States Of America, Finland, And Singapore: A Comparative Study, Bethany C. Pomponi

Kean Quest

Education systems around the world must put quality instruction as a priority, even as society constantly changes. Countries have to put a bigger emphasis on the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in their schools as the years have progressed. Those who have a career in the STEM areas are an integral part of sustaining a country’s economy. However, not every country does the best job in teaching STEM effectively and appropriately to students. Although countries around the world teach mathematics, each one has a different approach, as seen with scores from PISA and TIMMS regarding The …

Writing Workshop And Creativity Despite Standardization: An Exploration Of Elementary Teachers' Practices, Darcie Kress, Matt Townsley

Journal of Research Initiatives

The focus on formulaic approaches to writing in today’s classrooms can be problematic, for it may inadvertently cause the quality of students’ writing to decline. The National Writing Project (NWP) provides teachers with professional development to learn how to effectively incorporate evidence-based practices into their writing instruction. The aim of this study was to explore the practices of three elementary teachers who received professional development training from the NWP. The researchers investigated how these teachers navigated the tension between creativity in a workshop approach and accountability for teaching the Common Core writing standards. Findings suggest participants navigated the standardization of …

Understanding How Experienced World History Teachers In Minnesota Choose Course Content: A Mixed Methods Study, Kathleen Ferrero

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Education in the United States has consistently utilized tests as well as a relatively standard curriculum to educate the youth. However, the introduction of the No Child Left Behind Act and the subsequent implementation of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, has created an educational environment focused largely on math and literacy skills. This mixed methods study discovered the primary factors experienced world history teachers in Minnesota utilize to balance historical thinking skills and the inclusion of current events against national and statewide curricular standards. Five experienced teachers were interviewed, and their responses coded using qualitative methods. These themes informed …

Standards-Based Reforms: Impact And Future, Lucas A. Slizewski

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Standards-based reforms have brought about significant changes to the modern educational system. Standards-based reforms have been shown to have a positive impact on teachers’ instruction by helping to focus teaching. Standards-based reforms have also been shown to increase fairness in the classroom by allowing teachers to only focus on student achievement. Additionally, standards-based reforms help to improve the accuracy of grades and student achievement. Also, standards-based reforms impact the curriculum and the assessment of students. The assessment and grading of students also is shifted to focus exclusively on student achievement under standards-based reforms. These reforms are not without challenges, as …

Legitimate Physical Education - Emphasis On The Education, Daniel K. Drost, John R. Todorovich, Keith Young Oct 2019

Legitimate Physical Education - Emphasis On The Education, Daniel K. Drost, John R. Todorovich, Keith Young

Perspectives In Learning

Many educators and members of the lay public have differing definitions and understandings of school physical education. Based largely on personal experience or perception, many believe that school physical education should merely be a time during the day where children and adolescents are physically active in an effort to produce healthy outcomes. However, this is not only an improbable outcome, it greatly limits opportunities for children to become proficient within the psychomotor learning domain. Because school physical education is the only subject area where the physical domain is strictly addressed, the purpose of this essay is to define, affirm, and …

Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment: An Intervention Project At The Intersection Of Standards, Professional Knowledge And Assessment, Claire Wyatt-Smith

2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences

The benchmarking of education systems has been accompanied by an increasing policy interest in the evidence base for initial teacher education and the related claims about graduate quality. In some countries, this has also fuelled the move to install standards that seek to specify competence on entry to teaching and at stages of career progression. In Australia, referents for these efforts include the Australian professional standards for teachers: Graduate teachers (AITSL, 2011), and National Program Standards (AITSL, 2015). It was in the context of policy-driven reform in Australian initial teacher education (ITE) that a consortium of 13 ITE providers from …

Assessing Accomplished Teaching With Reliability And Validity: The Acer Portfolio Project, Lawrence Ingvarson

2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences

We know that good teachers are worth their weight in gold. But if good teaching is to be truly valued, the teaching profession must be able to demonstrate that it can evaluate itself in ways that are reliable, valid and fair. This capacity is central to any profession. It is also central to lifting the status of teaching, rewarding accomplished teaching and enabling teaching to complete with other professions for our ablest graduates. Recent OECD reports emphasise the necessity of strengthening the teaching profession, which depends upon widespread use of evidence-based teaching practices. Building the capacity for evaluation is the …

Quality Is Key In Early Childhood Education In Australia, Kate Torii, Stacey Fox, Dan Cloney

Early Childhood Education

Early education benefits all children, and can be transformative for the children with the greatest challenges. But not all children in Australia experience a high quality early education. Getting quality right is the key piece of the puzzle needed to deliver the promise of early education. Investing in early learning is a widely accepted approach, backed by extensive evidence, for governments and families to foster children’s development, lay the foundations for future learning and wellbeing, and reduce downstream expenditure on health, welfare and justice. While all children benefit from high quality early learning, research also shows that children experiencing higher …
