“It’S Part Of Your Life Now Because Someone Has Exposed You To It”: The Experiences Of Adult Learners Of Color In The Clemente Course In The Humanities, Charity Anderson

Journal of Research Initiatives

At 30 sites across the United States and Puerto Rico, the Bard College Clemente Course in the Humanities provides economically and socially marginalized adults with a free college course in the humanities. The experience of non-traditional adult students, particularly adults of color, is often missing from academic literature, exacerbating past injustices and increasingly marginalizing the historically underserved people and communities of color by higher education. This paper, which draws from a two-year critical ethnography of Clemente courses, examines the perspective of the adult learners of color who participated in the course. Interview and participant-observational data indicate that adults enrolled in …

Autonomous Professional Learning Through Practitioner Inquiry: A Study Of Growth Plan System Experiences, Daina Kelly Gaputis Jun 2023

Autonomous Professional Learning Through Practitioner Inquiry: A Study Of Growth Plan System Experiences, Daina Kelly Gaputis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The need for quality science education has long been established, but despite reform after reform, it remains a current concern. What we know as good teaching is not happening, perhaps because there is an increase in science teachers using alternative certification programs to enter the field. This lack of formal training causes teachers to have a reliance on professional learning opportunities to learn about reform-based science education. Unfortunately, traditional forms of professional learning are often inadequate, so newer professional learning designs have been established. Some of these newer designs, such as practitioner inquiry, offer teachers autonomy over how they assess …

Abstract

This article describes the current teacher professional development (PD) infrastructure of Hong Kong, one of the world’s top performers in education. Drawing on contemporary policy frameworks, institutional websites, and research literature, we outline how teachers from primary and secondary local schools are supported to enhance their professional capacity. After introducing the structure of the Hong Kong education system, we describe pre-service teacher education and the Professional Ladder framework, designed by the Education Bureau (EDB) to regulate in-service PD. We then describe the work done by the leading PD providers and the PD-related obstacles, difficulties, and constraints reported in the …

Engaging Preservice Secondary Science Teachers In A Ngss-Based Energy Lesson: A Nanoscience Context, Deepika Menon, Mary Sajini Devadas

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

The new approach to teaching science presented by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) warrants training high-quality science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers to prepare the future STEM workforce. We share the implementation of an energy lesson using a nanoscience approach, well-aligned with the NGSS vision, in a secondary- STEM-education course for preservice science teachers. First, we engaged preservice teachers in discussions related to alternate sources of energy; this was followed by a case-study approach to illustrate a real-world problem of energy deficiency and solar energy (solar cells using nanoparticles) as one potential solution because it is cost-efficient, clean, …

Developing Healthcare Practitioners’ Professional Expertise Through Effective Continuing Education: Commentary, Caroline Faucher Oct 2016

Developing Healthcare Practitioners’ Professional Expertise Through Effective Continuing Education: Commentary, Caroline Faucher

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Development of professional expertise is the transition from novice to expert within a profession through deliberate practice with feedback. While this development is actively stimulated during undergraduate studies, encouraging practicing healthcare professionals to pursue their development towards expertise doesn’t seem as obvious. This commentary briefly describes the development of professional expertise and the possible decline in performance that can occur with time. It then gives insight into the roles of continuing professional education in healthcare practitioners’ acquisition and maintenance of professional expertise.

Theory-Based Practice As Plural Interpretations: A Case Of The The Integration Of The Humanbecoming Theory In A Palliative Care Setting, Diane Tapp, Mireille Lavoie, Nicolas Vonarx

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Nurses and students are generally encouraged to base their practice on nursing grand theories and models. However, the concrete benefits of these models in practice are often debated. Given that past studies were mostly dedicated to documenting the benefits of nursing theories in practice and were conducted by their supporters, their contribution to the debate is questionable. In 2012, we conducted a retrospective case study in a palliative care unit in Canada where caregivers have based their practice on the Humanbecoming theory since two years. We aimed to examine the process of integration and its effects. Data was obtained from …

This contribution focuses on this academic discipline and its struggle to find a professional identity in universities and for their graduates. It suggests that “Andragogy” helps to clarify the specifics of the scholarly approach, thus contributing to a professional identity of this group of academics and graduates. International readers are invited, to compare the following arguments coming mainly from the German and European background with the developments in their countries, the similarities and differences.

Lifelong And Lifewide Learning - A Perspective, Jost Reischmann Jan 2014

Lifelong And Lifewide Learning - A Perspective, Jost Reischmann

IACE Hall of Fame Repository

This paper complements the concept of “lifelong learning” with the concept of “lifewide learning”. “Lifewide learning” is understood as the every day happening continuous life process of adults, which builds and changes personalities, caused not only by formal and self-directed intentional learning, but also by unintentional, but nevertheless important and effective learning. It is argued that the learning of adults - in contrast to traditional children school learning - is typically based on many situations and sources merged and mixed “widely” into concrete life. By focusing on this type of learning this chapter seeks to broaden the understanding of learning …

Research tells us that today the average person changes careers every ten years. In addition, the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that about 10% of workers change jobs every year. These trends suggest a constant need for continuing education and re-education. The online delivery of education is well suited for this. To be effective, however, there are several required components. This paper will review some of these essential components.
