The work on the emergency nursery school program in Washington started on January 6, 1934, in the State Department of Education. The purposes of the program as outlined by the state supervisor are pertinent here. (1) To serve the emergency needs of preschool children and their parents who are suffering from current social and economic difficulties. The purpose of the undergraduate teachers college is to educate young men and women for teaching in the elementary and secondary schools. Curriculum makers should arrange the courses of instruction and activities so that the student will be directed to do those things which he will be called upon to do in his profession and in his life after school. The curriculum of the teachers college is the fountainhead from which new ideas and materials for the public schools should flow. A heavy responsibility has been delegated to it.
