The tertiary training of pre-service teachers is pivotal in their professional preparation and formation as qualified educators. Multiple authors posit that teachers require a development of pedagogical content knowledge, or knowing a variety of ways to present mathematical content and to assist students to deepen their understanding (Chick, 2012; Shulman, 1987). Emerick, Hirsch and Berry (2003) argue that high quality teachers must possess appropriate mathematical content knowledge, and must also possess considerable background in communicating effectively to students. In September 2012 the Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) contracted the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to conduct this study into the financial return to employers from investing in workplace literacy training programs. The Australian Government, through its Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE), contracted the Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) to manage the project. Over 2013-14, this study developed and trialled a set of data collection instruments in pilot mode with seven training programs funded under the Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) program. When a crisis occurs, first reactions can be critical in ensuring a successful resolution. Behind Closed Doors is a program used by many housing professionals to expose staff to potential situations they might face. Students learn best by doing and adoption of BCD in a fraternal setting can aid in the handling of alcohol abuse, domestic disputes, fires, and crisis situations. Participants will be equipped with the necessary knowledge, tools, and resources to incorporate BCD into their community or organization.
