An Examination Of Chronic Absenteeism And The Impacts On Student Success, Rachel Pini
An Examination Of Chronic Absenteeism And The Impacts On Student Success, Rachel Pini
Culminating Experience Projects
Research shows that students who are chronically absent are less likely to graduate and have poorer academic achievement among other issues. Chronically absent students may struggle with attendance for a variety of reasons, and thus individualized interventions are the most effective when dealing with this issue. School counselors can provide school staff with resources to learn to deal with chronically absent students, to monitor attendance progress, and to form positive relationships with these students in order to improve the school’s climate. This project is a ready-to-use plan for school counselors to share with other educators in order to create a …
School Climate For Lgbtq Youth: Principals’ Perceptions And Experiences, Jessica L. George
School Climate For Lgbtq Youth: Principals’ Perceptions And Experiences, Jessica L. George
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study explored the practices that can mitigate a hostile school climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth and the barriers that negatively affect implementation of those practices. LGBTQ youth are at higher risk for bullying, harassment, and other characteristics of a harsh learning environment, which can result in negative outcomes, both short- and long-term. Principals of West Virginia public high schools were surveyed to collect data on the frequency at which LGBTQ-supportive practices are implemented in their schools and the barriers, if any, they faced. A total of n = 29 (x̄ = 27.6%) participants completed …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Mental health, and specifically anxiety, is a growing problem significantly impacting the well-being of adolescents in the United States. Thirteen percent of adolescent’s experience anxiety-related disorders annually (Hill, Waite & Creswell, 2016; Peterson, 2018). School districts are critical settings in which to provide the prevention and intervention of anxiety (DeKruyf, Auger & Trice-Black, 2013; Domitrovich, Durlak, Staley & Weissberg, 2017; Lendrum, Humphrey, & Wigelsworth, 2013; Warner et al., 2016). Using transcendental phenomenology, this study drew on the lived experiences of math and language arts teachers to show their perceptions of their role with students experiencing anxiety along with their background …

Reducing Alcohol-Related Consequences Among High School Seniors: Efficacy Of A Brief, Web-Based Intervention, Diana M. Doumas, Susan Esp
Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
The authors examined the efficacy of a brief, web-based personalized feedback intervention on reducing alcohol-related consequences among high school seniors (N = 105) using a group-randomized controlled design. Results of repeated measures mixed-models analyses indicated significant intervention effects over time for alcohol-related consequences at 30-day and 6-month follow-up assessments. Drinking risk-status moderated intervention effects such that results were only significant for high-risk drinkers (i.e., students reporting initiation of heavy episodic drinking at baseline).

School Connectedness As A Moderator Between Racial Microaggressions And Academic Performance For African American High School Students, Courtney Wilson
Dissertations
Racial microaggressions are subtle, often unconscious, words or actions that demean African Americans (Sue et al., 2007). The impact of racial microaggressions may not be seen, and so it is important to study potential long-term consequences such as academic performance. This study addressed an identified gap in the literature on the relationship between racial microaggressions and academic performance among African American high school students. A quantitative design was used to study the relationship between racial microaggressions and academic performance, and school connectedness as a moderating variable of this relationship. There were 417 high school students who completed the surveys. Of …

High School Transfer Student Transitions And Changes: Risk, Success, Failure, And The Vital Role Of The Counseling Curriculum, Benjamin M. Grais
Dissertations
Transfer students move schools for reasons other than promotion. They typically change residence and can change country, cultures and/or languages of instruction. These students have twice the risk of failure or not graduating and total 15-18% of the United States high school population. Effective means of improving success rates are needed. Achieving this goal requires first understanding the problem(s). Perhaps transfer students themselves can help us in our search. What can we learn from talking with transfer students?
For this mixed method study, the investigator interviewed ten diverse but carefully selected transfer students. The data revealed that transfer students describe …

The Moderating Role Of Adult Connections In High School Students' Sense Of School Belonging, Amy Dutton Tillery
Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations
Researchers have demonstrated that students who had a strong sense of school belonging exhibited greater academic motivation and performance (E. Anderman, 2002; Faircloth & Hamm, 2005), had fewer emotional and behavioral difficulties (Furrer & Skinner, 2003; McMahon, Singh, Garner, & Benhorin; 2004), and were less likely to dropout of school (Fredricks, Blumenfeld, & Paris, 2004; Knesting, 2008). Limited attention has been given to the potential factors that promote school belonging, especially in high school students. The purpose of this research was to examine the unique influence of adult connections on high school students’ sense of school belonging utilizing the framework …

Graduate Thesis Collection
The Western Boone County Community School Corporation, Thorntown, Indiana, in opening a new high school is concerned with instituting a guidance and counseling service to meet the needs of its students effectively. In instituting these services, it seems imperative to survey the people served in the guidance and counseling program, namely, the students, parents, teachers, administrators, and Board of Education, to discover the relative importance these publics ascribe to the various activities a counselor should be involved with in the school. Its usefulness will depend upon the extent to which the program will use the survey's results in conjunction with …
