This speech was given by Michael Tadesse-Bell at the Grand Opening of the Black Resource Center (BRC) - the third component of the Black Academic Success and Engagement Program (BASE).
Michael has a BS in Business Administration and an MA in Sports Management, both from USF. He is the BASE Program Manager and Assistant Dean of Retention and Persistence Programs here at USF.

The Black Resource Center (BRC) - the third component of the Black Academic Success and Engagement Program (BASE) - provides a safe, supportive space for black-identified undergraduate and graduate students to connect with each other to receive academic, spiritual, mentoring, and emotional support services.

The Association Between Electronic Bullying And School Absenteeism Among High School Students In The United States, Erin Grinshteyn, Y. Tony Yang

BACKGROUND: This study examines the relationship between exposure to electronic bullying and absenteeism as a result of being afraid. METHODS: This multivariate, multinomial regression analysis of the 2013 Youth Risk Behavior Survey data assessed the association between experiencing electronic bullying in the past year and how often students were absent in the last month due to feeling unsafe at/in transit to school. The model controlled for other predictors of school absence including demographics, physical / behavioral health, and risk factors. Missing data were multiply imputed. RESULTS: Electronic bullying was significantly associated with absences. Controlling for model covariates, the relative risk …

Boys Ii Men: A Culturally-Responsive School Counseling Group For Urban High School Boys Of Color, Leyla Pérez-Gualdrón, Christine J. Yeh, Lyryan Russell

Using a participatory and collaborative approach, we developed, implemented, and evaluated a culturally responsive school counseling group, Boys II Men, for 11 low-income diverse male students of color at an urban public school. The content of the group focused on five areas: social connections and support, exploring gender roles, navigating identities, school engagement, and future planning. We worked closely with teachers, school staff, and counselors to foster a supportive and positive school climate (Beesley, 2004). Each student was interviewed about his experience in the group to assess the impact of the strategies and techniques used. We also analyzed the specific …
