This poster summarises a proposed mixed methods study conducted by a researcher teacher to understand the impact of a therapy dog working in a co-educational day school through two research questions: What are the social and emotional benefits of a school-wide dog-assisted wellbeing intervention for students? Often at-risk students face emotional, social, financial, and academic challenges that can potentially hinder their scholarly performance. The Tiger Success Bridge Program, organized by the Academic Success Center at Ouachita Baptist University, actively allied with at-risk students to encourage and equip these students for success in their undergraduate education. This study analyzed quantitative data collected from the Tiger Success Bridge Program (TSBP), as well as, included qualitative research from TSBP and the Peer Mentor Program. Overall, results show a positive impact of the TSBP and the Peer Mentor Program for at-risk students at Ouachita Baptist University.

Research showed faculty-student interactions impact student engagement and was a primary factor to student retention (Kuh & Hu, 2001; Means & Pyne, 2017; Swecker et al., 2013; Tinto, 1987). The literature revealed while retention may be an issue for many institutions, there is a greater need to address retention specifically related to first-generation college students (FGCS). Students often seek advice from faculty and staff when faced with questions about their academic progress. Abstract
This paper is intended to learn about the experiences of military-affiliated students in post-secondary education by surveying veterans, service members, and dependents on what resources they have available, what resources they would like to have, and comparing between 2-year, 4-year, public, and private institutions. Participants were surveyed at five different institutions. Three closed-ended questions asked for background and other disadvantaged identifiers. Three open-ended questions ask in detail about their experiences at their institution. Students at public 4-year institutions received the best assistance with room to improve. It is important to empower students with information and understanding about trauma along with concepts and interventions for brain regulation and healing. When information about the impact of trauma is shared with students without first establishing a solid foundation for hope and change, it can do more harm than good. In this presentation, we will share guidelines and ideas for teaching key trauma-informed principles to students including physical, emotional and social regulation strategies as well as an understanding of the stress response.
