A study was performed on at-risk students in the Midland Independent School District, Midland, Texas utilizing Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) as an alternative counseling technique for improving the cognitive abilities of students. Students were divided into control and experimental groups and pre and post-tested with the Developing Cognitive Abilities Test, (Second Edition) (DCAT) 1990. The experimental group was given twelve sessions of treatment utilizing Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Results of the study showed a trend toward improved strategizing for learning.

A Comparison Of Mexican American Adolescent Educational And Career Decision-Making And Perceived Influences, C. Louise Lesser

Previous research has considered Mexican Americans as a homogeneous group in studies relating to education and career decision-making of adolescents. In a study of 22 Mexican American adolescents, using an interview format, results report similarities between lower and middle income Mexican American youth in occupational expectations and in value-orientations which are not characteristic of traditionalism. Findings indicate differences between the two groups in educational expectations, degree of certainty, effects of the familial environment, and in hope of success for the future. The purpose of this study is to incorporate several areas of intervention into one program with potential dropouts to determine if such a strategy would have a greater effect than intervention on a single variable. The subjects were 55 students in the 7th, 8th, or 9th grade, who were identified by the Ector County Independent School District as being at risk of dropping out of school. All subjects participated in academic remediation and counseling for 3 hours each school day for 7 weeks. Academic failure is a problem in American schools all over the nation. Many factors play a part in the academic achievement of students. The purpose of this study is to investigate student academic failure among students from lower socio-economic status families as compared with students from families with a higher socio-economic status, with sub-groupings identifying students as to racial and ethnic backgrounds as well as those from single-parent homes. This study was designed to investigate the efficacy of the peer helping model as a viable approach to extending guidance services to students not now being served effectively due to manpower constraints in the public schools. Evaluation and research data supporting peer counseling programs are limited. Since the use of peer helpers as an identified and organized element within a guidance program is a relatively new phenomenon, still considered experimental or "innovative", it is not surprising that information is tenuous and often ambiguous.
