Cultures Collide! Enhancing The Student Record Through The Lens Of Academic Integrity, Sylvia Kogut, Danielle Palombi, Angela Clark

Records Management in the Office of the Registrar and the Academic Integrity Office in Library and Learning Services worked together to centralize academic integrity data by creating a customized application in PeopleSoft that stores academic integrity remediation status, sends reminder emails to complete remediation, sends student and faculty status of incomplete remediation and stores breach record(s) and supporting documentation gathered from the investigation process. Records can be accessed by administration and program support staff and can assist in decision making as it pertains to sanctioning and appeals. First Year Learning Communities (FYLC) at City Tech is structured to provide first-year students in linked courses an interdisciplinary learning experience. This approach creates opportunities for students to form bonds within the college community. A shared belief among faculty leaders in the potential for writing to transform the student experience led to the development of the “Our Stories” digital writing project. “Our Stories” offers FYLC students the opportunity to express their experiences in classes, seminars, lectures, study groups, and labs on the OpenLab, a digital platform for teaching, learning, and sharing. The variety of academic majors offered by universities seems to become more eclectic each year. From public relations to environmental economics to 3D graphics, the coursework and journeys taken by students across the country are exceptionally diverse. The University of Rhode Island offers over 100 majors, making it undeniable that some disciplines are disparate. My project calls attention to similarities in an area where the focus is customarily on the contrary. Before students were categorized, they all faced the same question – “What should my major be?”

Given the increasing diversity in our nation’s schools and communities, preparing school counseling students to understand and address systemic inequities are instrumental in the development of counseling skills and techniques. This session will provide counselor educators with methods to implement a uniform service-learning approach to teaching school counseling field experience seminars, while incorporating ideas for developing students’ multicultural competency and social justice awareness.

Numerous psychological and behavioral consequences of obesity have been identified, including low self-esteem, depression, and poor academic performance. Given the higher obesity rates among Latino children and adolescents compared to their white counterparts, this session will provide school counselors with specific recommendations on how to implement an obesity prevention program in a culturally-sensitive manner that promotes development of healthy lifestyles and academic success.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, a student drops out of school every nine seconds, with Latino and African American students being disproportionately represented. Findings from a survey study will be discussed, including evidence-based interventions to promote college attainment among Latino and African American students.

Through partnership with two BPS high schools, school counseling graduate students engage in service learning and participate in organized experiences that meet school needs and are coordinated with graduate students' learning goals. School counseling students meet with BPS students individually and through classroom interventions to assist in the college/career process and prepare them for post-secondary educational options. This session will describe the partnership, including direct experiences shared by graduate students.

By the 10th grade, 40% of adolescent Latinos/as drop out of school, with Latino/a English language learners (ELLs) dropping out at an even higher rate. A survey-based study conducted in the Northeast revealed many evidence-based interventions that school counselors implement on behalf of Latino/a ELLs to improve academic achievement. This session will provide you with the skills and knowledge to work with some of the most challenging cases involving Latino/a ELLs and how to close achievement/opportunity gaps. Discussion and sharing information about various school counselor practices will be encouraged.
