A Pilot Study On The Retention And Turnover Of Ncaa Division Ii Sports Information Directors, David Albrecht Dec 2020

A Pilot Study On The Retention And Turnover Of Ncaa Division Ii Sports Information Directors, David Albrecht

Leadership Education Capstones

This study reports on sports information directors (SID) at the collegiate level limited to NCAA Division II athletic programs. An online survey was used for all participants, and select respondents completed follow-up interviews. Surveys were intended to determine the impact of work-life balance and overall workload of the SID role. Survey questions sought to find perceptions of SIDs by athletic administrators, including the athletic director (AD), and if their role provided opportunities for career advancement within collegiate athletic administration. The results of the study showed that institution/department culture, family, and professional growth factored heavily on retention. Adversely, turnover was linked …

Physical Education And Anti-Blackness, Brian Culp

Faculty and Research Publications

This commentary is not intended to be an all-inclusive “catch-all” but a starting point to inspire behavior change, cultural fluency, and an “ideological repositioning” of how we think about our professional work. In defining anti-Blackness, the article provides perspectives from educational literature, research, and personal observations before providing a challenge to SHAPE America and all professionals involved in efforts related to the promotion of quality physical education.

Self-Efficacy Belief And The Influential Coach: An Examination Of Collegiate Athletes, Erianne A. Weight, Megan Lewis, Molly Harry Nov 2020

Self-Efficacy Belief And The Influential Coach: An Examination Of Collegiate Athletes, Erianne A. Weight, Megan Lewis, Molly Harry

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

Self-efficacy beliefs related to the performance of a task have been identified as strong predictors of performance success. Research has hypothesized that the most influential contextual factor in athlete self-efficacy development is the athlete-coach relationship, yet there is little research on this relationship. The purpose of this study was to examine collegiate athletes’ perceptions of the prevalence of transformative and destructive coaches, the teaching methods athletes perceive to be transformative (strengthening self-efficacy belief), and the influence of coaching methods on sport self-efficacy belief. Just over two-thirds of the athletes expressed having transformative coaches while over one-third experienced coaches they defined …

Up, Down, And All-Around: The Swirling-Transfer Collegiate Athlete Experience, Ethan Swingle, Cristobal Salinas Nov 2020

Up, Down, And All-Around: The Swirling-Transfer Collegiate Athlete Experience, Ethan Swingle, Cristobal Salinas

Journal of Athlete Development and Experience

Intercollegiate athletics have become an integral part of campus life (Denhart, Villwock, & Vedder, 2010; Mixon & Trevino, 2005; Shulman & Bowen, 2001), and have grown exponentially in the resources universities put forth to participate in this extracurricular activity (Clotfelter, 2011). One of the biggest evolutions of intercollegiate athletics has been the collegiate athlete transfer phenomenon (Cooper & Hawkins, 2014); however, little research has been conducted on transfer collegiate athletes, or the transfer collegiate athlete experience. As such, the purpose of this instrumental case study was to discover and describe the experiences and perceptions of swirling-transfer collegiate athletes at Athletic …

Can Writing Be Wrong? Collaborative Autoethnography As Critical Reflective Practice In Sport, Exercise, And Performance Psychology, Sae-Mi Lee, Janaina Fogaca, Marlen Harrison Oct 2020

Can Writing Be Wrong? Collaborative Autoethnography As Critical Reflective Practice In Sport, Exercise, And Performance Psychology, Sae-Mi Lee, Janaina Fogaca, Marlen Harrison

The Qualitative Report

Critical reflective practice (CRP) facilitates macro-level reflections about social contexts and power structures through the interrogation of one’s own experiences (Knowles & Gilbourne, 2010). Despite the importance of CRP, examples of how one actually engages in CRP are scarce in sport psychology. Moreover, given that writing in academia is traditionally “author evacuated” (Knowles & Gilbourne, 2010, p. 512), it is questionable how traditional writing practices help facilitate critical reflections. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine how sport psychology professionals can engage in CRP through the use of author-centered writing. Specifically, we responded to Knowles and Gilbourne’s (2010) …

The Relationship Between Alcohol Consumption, Academic Success, And Athletic Identity In Collegiate Student-Athletes, Zoe Arnold, Hung-Ling (Stella) Liu

Health and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Upon entering college, students around the United States are exposed to alcohol and the potentially dangerous experiences and effects that come with consuming alcohol. Whether the individual is a general college student or a college student-athlete, the issues are prevalent. According to the 2014 United States Census, there are approximately 23 million students attending U.S. colleges. According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), there are 460,000 student-athletes across the United States (NCAA, 2017). When National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) student-athletes are included, the overall number then surpasses 500,000. A student-athlete (SA) can be defined as an individual who …
