With so many uncertainties in childcare centers all across America (especially in a world of COVID-19), it is crucial to have Positive Behavioral Systems and Supports (PBIS) in place to ensure success in learning environments for all children. Typically speaking, the center that I work in has four classrooms, with each teacher directly in charge of their own students. In a normal school year, teachers also are given the opportunity to interact and work with students from other age groups, giving all children a chance to form relationships with each adult. As more students are moved from self-contained to inclusive classroom environments general educators will need the capacity to meet all students’ needs. The purpose of this qualitative case study explored how school personnel (school psychologists, intervention specialists, and general educators) perceived the influence of Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) on classroom behavior. This exploration was guided by the behaviorism theoretical framework. Behaviorism as a theoretic framework for FBA considers what is directly happening in the environment from an antecedent or external stimulus-response perspective. Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a multi-tiered system of support for addressing discipline problems in schools through proactive and positive discipline procedures, guided by evidenced-based behavioral interventions across a continuum based on student need. Within the 1997 amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), there was a mandate for PBIS and functional behavior assessments to be utilized with students with disabilities. Schools have since made the shift toward creating school-wide PBIS or commonly known as School Wide Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (SWPBIS) to support behavior for all students, not only those with disabilities.
