The Effectiveness Of Point-Of-View-Video Modeling On Improving Social And Communication Skills, Beyza Alpaydin Jul 2020

The Effectiveness Of Point-Of-View-Video Modeling On Improving Social And Communication Skills, Beyza Alpaydin

Doctoral Dissertations

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurobiological disorder with symptoms that affect individuals’ social interaction capabilities, their verbal and nonverbal communications, and the repertoires of activities and interest. These deficits in social and communication skills directly or indirectly influence the individual with ASDs’ lives. Therefore, many interventions have been developed to increase social and communication skills for individuals with ASD. Video modeling (VM) is one of the effective interventions in teaching social communication skills for children with ASD. There are multiple variations of VM interventions. One of the forms of VM intervention is point-of-view video modeling (POVVM) that has …

Parental Perceptions Of Water Safety Among Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Amanda Casey Ph.D., Jennifer Blok, Katherine Vaughan, William O'Dwyer May 2020

Parental Perceptions Of Water Safety Among Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Amanda Casey Ph.D., Jennifer Blok, Katherine Vaughan, William O'Dwyer

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are twice as likely to die from unintentional drowning compared to same-age children without ASD emphasizing the importance of water-safety skills and knowledge. Yet little research has been published on perceptions of water safety for this population. The objective of the study was to investigate parental perceptions of water safety amongst children with ASD. An online questionnaire focusing on parental perceptions of water safety was distributed to parents of children with ASD associated with autism support groups across Canada. Forty-nine parents completed the self-report questionnaire with items related to demographics, swimming proficiency and lessons, …

The Effects Of Using Perseverative Interests Or Obsessions On Token Economies For Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jennie N. Verive May 2020

The Effects Of Using Perseverative Interests Or Obsessions On Token Economies For Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jennie N. Verive

Masters Theses, 2020-current

A single-subject, alternating treatments design with initial baseline testing was used to analyze the effectiveness of perseverative interests or obsessions as tokens within a token economy to change behavior. The literature examined in this paper presents several examples of how token economies are used to effect behavior change. Two research questions were addressed in this study; 1) What is the effect of incorporating perseverative interests or obsessions into a token economy designed to decrease problem behaviors? 2) What are the effects over time of incorporating perseverative interests or obsessions into a token economy compared to a traditional token (i.e., a …

Effects Of Bug-In-Ear Technology On Specific Praise Statements Given By Paraeducators To Transition-Age Students With Autism, Olga Karadimou, Sierra Lotts, Annmarie Horn Apr 2020

Effects Of Bug-In-Ear Technology On Specific Praise Statements Given By Paraeducators To Transition-Age Students With Autism, Olga Karadimou, Sierra Lotts, Annmarie Horn

College of Education & Professional Studies (Darden) Posters

This investigation experimentally evaluated the effects of eCoaching with Bug-in-Ear (BIE) technology on the use of contingent specific praise in three paraeducators working in a special education transition classroom. A trained special education teacher provided performance-based feedback in real-time as paraeducators worked one-on-one with transition-age students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and comorbid intellectual disability (ID). As such, we used a multiple baseline research design to evaluate the effects of the independent variable (i.e., eCoaching). Results indicated that eCoaching using BIE technology increased the use of contingent specific praise given by paraeducators as they worked one-on-one with students. Increased rates …
