The purpose of this study was to better understand how certified volunteer dog therapy handlers can be integrated into special education settings. Although the pet therapy discourse confirms the overall impact dog therapy has on youth’s psychological health (e.g., Groenewoud et al., 2023), research that could elucidate how volunteer handlers modify the way they have their dogs interact with special education populations is a present-day need that has otherwise not appeared in the literature. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a common strategy that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use to help individuals better communicate. AAC is used to assist or replace verbal communication. This strategy can include pointing at pictures, having a device that speaks typed words, or using gestures such as sign language. AAC is commonly used to help individuals with autism spectrum disorder with communication. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong developmental disability that impacts social communication and interaction. Individuals with ASD also commonly have restrictive or repetitive behaviors. In a changing health care industry, it is imperative that different healthcare professionals collaborate to address the state of the patient. Respiratory therapists (RTs) and speech-language pathologists {SLPs) frequently work with the same general patient population in the healthcare setting; however, while RTs typically provide emergency interventions, SLPs work with the patient in the rehabilitative domain. Each profession has a unique understanding of the patient and may encounter an overlap in responsibilities for performing a particular task, including management of tracheostomy tubes and prevention of aspiration pneumonias. In a society that appears to take independence for granted at times, it has become more and more of a necessity for educators to combat this trend and foster independence within students. One way educators can foster independence is by supporting the cultivation of self-determination and self-advocacy within students during the school-age years. As part of this project, a literature review was conducted to compile the components of self-determination and self-advocacy of students with learning disabilities and mild cognitive impairments. Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a condition which deteriorates the brain and results in a form of dementia. Its the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. and its symptoms have significant impact on both individual with AD and their caregivers. Family members are often confused and overwhelmed with an AD diagnosis. This thesis incorporates a comprehensive literature review that addresses four significant areas of need for individuals with AD: Feeding, communication, behavioral, and activities of daily life. It is important for children to have effective socialization, no matter what type of disability they may have when it comes to communication. Friendship and play opportunities with others usually provide cognitive learning opportunities as well as social learning opportunities. For most children, school is a key setting for them to engage in friendships and develop social interactions. This study investigated eight special education teachers' perspectives on the communication needs of children with Down syndrome within the school context, as well as the teachers' knowledge and resources needed to facilitate their students' social interactions. Significant differences in brain activation patterns exist between readers with and without dyslexia (Shaywitz, 1998). One possible area of difference involves font style that has led to the development of specific fonts to help individuals with dyslexia. Recent studies of dyslexia-specific fonts provide no specific evidence that they improve an individual's reading ability or speed of reading.

College institutions often emphasize the importance of service learning for their students. After research revealed a lack of volunteer opportunities for college aged individuals with disabilities, a pilot program was developed to examine the benefits of service for this population, as well as their peers without disabilities. The project involved college undergraduates and young adults with an intellectual or developmental disability. After a weeklong service trip together, benefits were discussed and evaluated. Benefits to the participants with disabilities included pride, skill development and generalization, empowerment, and increases in social interaction. Many students at public high schools enrich their high school experience and gain valuable skills through their participation in extra-curricular activities including, but not limited to, high school student leadership organizations. In this study, the researcher aims to present qualitative data obtained from semi-structured interviews that provide insight into the accessibility of high school student leadership organizations to students with disabilities. This study examines the perspectives of both student leaders in high school student leadership organizations and students with disabilities at three public high schools. Nineteen parents and students were interviewed in fifteen different interviews. Participants were asked a series of questions to explore their perspectives on the inclusion of children with disabilities in general education classrooms. Their responses were recorded via tape recorder and written documentation. Parents of children with and without disabilities felt that inclusion is beneficial socially and developmentally to all involved. Students without disabilities do not mind having children with disabilities in their classroom.

Today’s teachers are asked to educate ALL students using research-based strategies in inclusive classrooms. The following review will include three research based instructional strategies and one teaching model all of which are elements that can increase the success of students at risk for learning problems. Instructional strategies explored in this review are class-wide peer tutoring, direct instruction and the behavioral strategy of self-monitoring. In today’s society, Autism has become quite prevalent. New research has indicated that the prevalence of diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) has increased (Ouellette-Kuntz, 2007). Research hasn’t yet concluded what specifically causes ASD (Mankoski et al, 2006). However, new theories and information from research indicates that it may derive from genetic reasons (Mankoski et al, 2006).
