Music is so many things! Music is enjoyable, fun, happy, calming, and unpredictable. Music is also sad, lonely, busy, unsettling, and disturbing. Students of any age can learn so much from music, such as: learning an instrument; playing in an ensemble, symphony, orchestra, or choir; learning the history of a composer; playing scales; and learning about music theory. Students without disabilities learn about music and their instruments by participating in band, orchestra, choir, ensembles, and general music. Music education has an important place for students with special needs. Through community based arts education programs, student benefits range from social to academic. The problem is that too often music education, among arts programs, is not taught in special education classrooms. The purpose of this study was to identify benefits that music education has on students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), focusing specifically on academic, behavioral, and communicative skills.

Though extensive studies exist regarding the use of the arts in general education settings, a comparable amount of research is still needed to support the need for the use of the arts in special education settings. The purpose of this study was to examine Michigan music teachers' attitudes and perceptions regarding their training for and experience with special learners in their classrooms, and their collaboration and consultation with music therapists. Eighty-six music educators completed a 51 item questionnaire. Results showed that music teachers' attitudes and perceptions are generally positive toward inclusion. Mean scores for attitude and perception were not influenced by whether participants had or had not taken a course in special education as a student, whether they had access to continuing education regarding inclusion through their school district, or participants' predominant teaching area or degree …
