Students with mental health diagnosis, trauma or special education labels such as emotional behavioral disorder or learning disabilities often show signs of distress, and/or dysregulation in the classroom. They are referred to providers and evaluated based on the behaviors or symptoms that are presented. Many times, these behaviors impact their ability to learn, regulate emotions and function when compared to their typically developing peers. These students have developed maladaptive behaviors to cope with strong feelings. The focus of this research is to better understand causes of anxiety and depression among college students and how colleges can better assist these students. For various reasons, social anxiety is linked to excessive drinking and binge eating/exercising. A comorbid relationship exists between anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance. Sleep disturbance has multiple causes, but this research mostly focused on how technology interferes with sleep. In addition to sleep disturbance, excessive drinking, and binge eating/exercising/anxiety and depression are linked to perfectionism, goal setting, living accommodations, parent attachment and transition, and career planning. Children labeled with Emotional Behavior Disorder (EBD), as defined by the educational system, have behavioral factors that impact their educational success in school. Research suggests that social skills instruction, mindfulness training, and positive behavior supports promoted behavioral changes. Research indicated that promoting pro-social skills and using teaching consequences result in a reduction of out-of-school suspension rates. Following a literature review, a teaching intervention was constructed and implemented for students identified with EBD in a secondary setting. The interventions included social skills instruction, mindfulness, and positive attention training. The intervention results indicated a reduction in negative behaviors and reduced suspension rates …

Twenty-first century schools are not like the schools of last century. The student population brings with it an entirely new set of parameters that the standard teacher-student model of education can no longer accommodate. Special education students along with the general education population enter school with more trauma than students of the past have. This means that new ways of helping these students need to be learned and implemented so students can have successful careers and teachers will stay in the field.
