Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
To what extent do universities respect human rights? Despite the prevailing view that universities are bastions of progressive ideas with a bias for rights protection, anecdotal evidence suggests that they diverge significantly in their commitment to promote and protect human rights, even within the U.S. To this point, though, there exists no systematic measure of university human rights commitments. In this manuscript, we introduce the first such indicator - the Campus Human Rights Index (CHRI). We describe the measure and introduce our initial ranking of universities. We then formally assess the construct validity of our measure by comparing it to …

Obstacles To Excellence: Academic Freedom And China's Quest For World-Class Universities, Chelsea Blackburn Cohen
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
China’s government has made significant investments to develop universities that already compete with the world’s best. Their progress has captured global attention over the years, with universities around the world forging partnerships with institutions in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and scholars and students around the world flocking to study, teach, and research in the country. But while China continues to stoke its ambitions for developing more world-class universities, respect for academic freedom and other human rights essential to quality higher education lags behind, leaving scholars and students at risk, and the country’s goals in balance.
With the recent …

Title IX Summit
Back by popular demand, last year's Supporting LGBTQ+ Survivors on Campus has been revamped for the new state of Title IX. Historically, Title IX protections have provided a much-needed resource for addressing sexual violence on campus. However, the benefits of Title IX may not apply equally to all students in practice. This workshop will discuss how the history of Title IX raises questions about its applicability for all sexual violence, and ultimately explore strategies for addressing sexual violence in lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities. How effectively does Title IX address same-sex violence? What other policy and programmatic …

How Have We Improved? Exploring Racial Inequalities In Special Education, Erin Greer
How Have We Improved? Exploring Racial Inequalities In Special Education, Erin Greer
Student Symposium
This Independent Study explored the racial inequalities noted within the field of special education, particularly related to identification for certain disability categories and eligibility for special education services. An example of this would be more African American males being identified as having an Emotional Behavior Disorder, Learning Disability, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. More severe disciplinary practices can also be noted among male, African American students with and without disabilities. Racial inequalities have been well documented in special education, even prior to the first special education law in 1975. Since then, awareness of racial inequalities when identifying students with disabilities …

Engagement & Service-Learning Summit
National Chemistry Week (NCW), an outreach program initiated by the American Chemical Society (ACS), encourages scientists to bring their love of chemistry to the community. The Plutonium Chapter (Purdue University) of Iota Sigma Pi (ISP) organizes an annual celebration of this event in which over 1600 elementary school students are exposed to hands-on experiments related to the annual theme. In 2018, the theme was “Chemistry is Out of This World,” which allowed nearly a 100 volunteers to explore several space-themed experiments with children from three different school districts all over the Greater Lafayette area. Our poster outlines the preparation of …
