A hallmark of being Catholic is a concern for and dedication to those in need and our service to others. Jacqueline Kelleher, faculty member in the Isabelle Farrington College of Education at Sacred Heart University, discusses how her studies of the Catholic intellectual tradition moved her to become a member of the Bridgeport Board of Education, Connecticut's largest, poorest, lowest achieving school district.

On September 23 2013, as part of Sacred Heart University’s commemoration of its 50th anniversary, Michael W. Higgins provided insight into the University’s beginnings and its promising future. Higgins is SHU’s vice president for Mission and Catholic Identity. Professor Higgins' presentation coincided with the publication of the booklet "1963."

The year 1963 was a time of international tensions, major social and political turbulence, and the early years of the Second Vatican Council. Great changes were taking place around the world, inspiring Bishop Walter W. Curtis of Bridgeport to create a university in which laity would assume leadership.

There is an opportunity to bring college students to the exploration of the grandeur and wonder of the universe through the design and crafting of courses for the university and liberal arts curricula that would develop multidisciplinary perspectives within the frames of reference of astrophysics and cosmology. In his remarks, Mr. Scharper speaks about the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, and concludes --"An act of faith, then, as well as an act of dedication and consecration: for this library must be the beating heart, not only of the community of learning: as a Christian library, it must be the beating heart of a community of love."
