The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic left many students with ruined plans during the summer of 2020. For sophomore music and chemistry major Abbi Sullins from Benton, that was not the case. Sullins worked as a medical screener for the coronavirus at the Saline Memorial Hospital in her hometown of Benton. Sullins had a history at Saline Memorial as her mother Amy worked in the hospital for many years when Sullins was a child.

Dr. Nathan Reyna, associate professor of biology at Ouachita Baptist University, has won the first Innovation in Education Award from the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB).

The Cell Bio Virtual 2021 conference was held online Dec. 1-10. Cell Bio is a joint international annual meeting of the ASCB and the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). Reyna spoke and was presented with his award on the first day of the virtual meeting.

Sarah Critton, a freshman communications and media major from Little Rock, Ark., participated in the Arkansas Cinema Society’s Filmmaking Lab for Teen Girls from July 7-Aug. 6 in Little Rock.

The lab is held annually for high school girls who hope to follow in the footsteps of prominent women in directing, cinematography, costume designing, editing and screenwriting. Over the span of a month, Critton and eight other contributors chose a storyline, wrote a script, cast characters and shot a 5-minute short film.

Ouachita Baptist University has set several enrollment records for the Fall 2021 semester, including the school’s highest total enrollment in 55 years as well as the largest freshman class, best freshman-to-sophomore retention rate and highest four-year graduation rate on record.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Rosemary Gossett Adams Department of Art & Design is hosting “Crowded Spaces,” an exhibit by Arlington, Texas, artist Treslyn Shipley through Oct. 3 in the Adams Gallery in Moses-Provine Hall. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Carl Goodson Honors Program hosted its annual Black and White Ceremony on Wednesday, March 3, awarding three honors students with thesis research grants, inducting 123 new members and presenting 63 students with badges for their successful thesis proposals.

“This is by far the largest group of thesis badge recipients we have ever had,” said Dr. Barbara Pemberton, director of the Carl Goodson Honors Program and professor of Christian missions at Ouachita. “Over 60 students are now working on wonderful thesis projects that will be published later this spring. Six Ouachita Baptist University student delegates attended and received recognition for their respective roles at the Midwest Model United Nations simulation, held virtually Feb. 19-21 this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All six participants received recognition this year, either through individual award or as part of a delegation; Ouachita’s delegates included Cole Alexander, Taryn Bewley, Faith Moore, Anna Roussel, Rylie Slone and Spencer Worth.

“In my 27 years at Ouachita, these were the best results achieved by our delegations,” said Dr. Kevin Brennan, professor of political science. “Five students represented Mexico, while one student represented Uruguay.”

Danielle Hall, a senior musical theatre major from Prairie Grove, Ark., won first place in Ouachita Baptist University’s 23rd annual Mary Shambarger Competition for Singers on Tuesday, Feb. 23. This year’s competition repertoire featured art songs.
