The Community Programs branch of the Department of Public Relations at the University of San Diego, known in 2016 as the Department of Community and Government Relations, serves as the key liaison between the University of San Diego and the San Diego community. These records document that interaction during the 1980s and 1990s. Records consist of nearby Community Plans; correspondence and news releases about community events; and information about grants to serve the surrounding community. The bulk of these materials were created by Director of Community Programs, Maria Martinez-Cosio, and Director of Volunteer Programs, Judy Rauner.

These records include the administrative records and event planning materials for the President's Club. These records document the founding of the President's Club as a way to honor the University of San Diego's major benefactors. These records also include planning materials for the President's Club Dinner, the primary event held to recognize President's Club donors. Planning materials include correspondence, meeting materials, membership lists, invitations, and documentation of the food and entertainment planned for the night. Correspondence includes review of the previous years' dinner as well as planning discussion for the current year.

This collection contains planning records, videos, and news clippings associated with both the 1992 and 1996 Presidential Debates. 1992 Debate records cover the selection and subsequent cancellation of USD as a host site. News clippings also cover the controversy between the Bush and Clinton campaigns over why the debate was canceled. 1996 Debate records include correspondence, site selection and visitation information, planning meeting records, and contract information with the Commission on Presidential Debates. University Records

Esther LaPorta collected these records during her tenure at the University of San Diego. LaPorta gathered historical records about the founding of USD to provide context during donor events. Correspondence between Bishop Charles Buddy and Mother Rosalie Hill, for example, were used to construct the narrative for the 1999 President's Dinner. Correspondence between Bishop Charles Buddy and members of the Nolan family, articles and manuscripts written about the founding of the San Diego College for Women and the early history of the University of San Diego, and records pertaining to President Author Hughes are also included.
