Edward LeRoy Simpson was born in Miami, Oklahoma in 1934, to Eddie and Ada Simpson. From 1952-1956 LeRoy attended the Kansas State Teachers College (now Pittsburg State University). He played several positions on the football team, including quarterback, and lettered all four years. He went on to receive a master’s degree from the Kansas State Teachers College in 1961. Barnard attended the Kansas Teachers College of Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) from 1936-1940 and after graduation, worked as an accountant. He worked with the Deming Investment Company and then the First National Bank of Oswego. The Alpha Beta Chapter of Omicron Nu was established at the University of Maine on April 9, 1931, by National President, Dean Margaret M. Justin, of Kansas State College. Among the 11 charter members were Mildred Brown Schrumpf. The objective of the society was to recognize and promote scholarship, leadership, and research in the field of Human Economics. Helen C. Gibson Dubois (1894-1978) and Evva Louise Gibson (1896-1980) were sisters who both attended the Kansas State Manual Training Normal School (now Pittsburg State University). Evva received her first bachelor’s degree in 1918. She received a second in 1922, and a master’s degree in 1925, both from Columbia University in New York. She returned to Pittsburg in 1923 as an assistant professor at the college. In 1947, she became head of the Home Economics Department, …

Esther Atkinson Perry was born to John and Mary Atkinson on April 29, 1897. She grew up in southeast Kansas, and lived in Pittsburg, Girard, and Webb City, Missouri. In 1933, Esther married Thomas Hall Perry in Jackson County, Missouri. Afterwards, they moved to Webb City where Thomas was the manager of a café before working as a chemist at the Eagle-Picher Smelting Company in Joplin. Thomas passed away in 1947 of coronary thrombosis. …

Helen Beatrice Lortz, a Food for Peace Program Officer, was born in 1910 and died in 2009. She graduated from Kansas State Teachers College (Pittsburg State University) with a B.S. in Education in 1932. Lortz was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi sorority, staying involved throughout her life. In 1933, Lortz earned a job with the Civilian Conservation Corps where she trained workers to work office jobs, working with the CCC until 1941. Established in 1935 by University of Maine President Arthur A. Hauck, Maine Day was a day for students to plant trees, build sidewalks, paint fences, and generally improve the campus grounds. The purpose of Maine Day has evolved over time and in 1973 became a day for students, faculty, and staff to participate in general community service projects. Materials include newspaper clippings, scripts, photographs, correspondence, transparencies, and an audio tape from Maine Day 1965.

The University of Maine has provided undergraduate education in social work and social welfare since the 1950's and began offering the BA degree in Social Work in 1972. The BSW program was granted initial accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in 1979. The graduate program leading to the Master of Social Work degree was approved by the Board of Trustees in 1987. Records in this collection are mainly textual information and photographic material created by Professor Alaric Faulkner and his survey teams. The record group also includes cartographic material, cassette tapes, and some computer discs and audio visual material.

The record series Administrative Records includes material related to the administration of the University of Maine's Department of Anthropology, includes a proposal for a graduate study in historical archaeology, details of Faulkner's appointment as Historical Archaeologist at the University of Maine in 1978, and a report by Faulkner on his activities from 1984-1985.

Mary Caffrey Low (later Carver), born on March 22, 1850, in Waterville, Maine, was the first woman to graduate from Colby College. In 1871, she enrolled as the college's first female student, to graduate four years later in 1875. She was one of the first women in New England to receive a regular A.B. degree. Low was the only female student at Colby until the fall of 1873, when she was joined by four other women, among them Louise Helen Coburn. In 1874, Low co-founded the Sigma Kappa Sorority.
