Critical Mindfulness In The Secondary English Language Arts Classroom, Alanna Harris
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative dissertation examines teachers’ perceptions of integrating mindfulness practices in secondary English Language Arts (ELA) classrooms, emphasizing urban schools with a significant number of Black and Brown students. The study addresses the gap in existing research examining if mindfulness is aligned with culturally-based pedagogies to support Black and Brown students effectively. The central research question is: What frameworks do ELA teachers use to deliver mindfulness within the curriculum and pedagogy to support Black and Brown students in urban secondary settings? Using a phenomenological intuitive inquiry research design, this research analyzed interviews of seven secondary ELA teachers across five cycles …

Did Magnet Schools Improve Student Educational Outcomes As A Tool Of Desegregation?, Maureen Elizabeth Pylman
Theses and Dissertations
Magnet schools were implemented in American school districts beginning in the 1970s as part of desegregation plans often required by court order. Magnet schools had three primary goals: provide innovative educational programming, attract students from across school districts, and assist with desegregation. Research evaluating the implementation of magnet schools found that they did effectively desegregate schools (Arcia 2006; Steel and Levine 1994). However, the educational outcomes of magnet schools have not been evaluated, particularly using longitudinal student data, to evaluate magnet school effectiveness. Popular press, the use of effective pedagogy, selection procedures, and exclusivity lead to expectations that magnet schools …

The Career Development Of Latina Women Achieving The Position Of Public High School Principal, Consuelo A. Palacio
Theses and Dissertations
For this qualitative study, I used the lens of the Social Cognitive Career Theory to investigate the lived experiences of Latina women navigating their career paths into the roles of public high school principals. Latina women are underrepresented and in some states they are not represented at all. Few Latina women have secured the position of high school principal in public education; however for those who have, it is unclear how they attained the position. It was significant to learn about the factors that have lead to the representation of Latina women who serve as high school principals. The representation …
The Lived Experiences Of 24/7 Connectivity On Secondary Educators, James Patrick Heiden
The Lived Experiences Of 24/7 Connectivity On Secondary Educators, James Patrick Heiden
Theses and Dissertations
Student access to the Internet has dramatically increased during the first decade of 2000. A recent study indicated that over 85% of US teens have regular access to a cell phone (Rideout et al., 2010). The cell phone coupled with an Internet plan has created the smart phone. This technology allows students to decide when and where they want to learn. This new connectedness has created a new phenomenon for classroom teachers; the ability to connect with their students in a 24/7 environment. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of five urban/suburban teachers in the Metro-Milwaukee area who routinely …
