In this brief, we examine the relationship between course failures among Arkansas’s 9th grade students and the grade levels served in their school. We find that in schools that terminate at 9th grade, 9th graders are less likely to fail one or more course during the year compared to failure rates in schools that terminate at 12th grade. We suggest an increase in awareness and examination of how we assess 9th graders in Arkansas.

Low graduation rates, rising drop-out rates, and increasing apathy and disengagement in learning has prompted the need for new strategies and interventions in education. This case study provides an analysis of the perceptions of high school teachers related to the impact of the explicit, intentional inclusion of fun in direct instruction. The participants included approximately 20% of the faculty in a semirural high school of approximately 1,325 students. The case study involved individual interviews with half of the participants and the other half participating in a focus group conversation. Six participants in each group were observed. However, there is little empirical evidence to support the notion that such student organizations help students to achieve academic gains. The purpose of this project was to develop a model program for the eighth grade graduates from Naches Valley Middle School transitioning to the ninth grade at Naches Valley High School. The intent of the program was to increase the ninth grade student academic and social success. To accomplish this purpose, a review of current literature, research and selected programs related to transitioning middle school students and parent involvement in the transition, were studied. A program was designed, developed and implemented at Naches Valley High School in the Naches Valley School District, Naches, Washington.
