As Catholic schools serve an increasingly racially diverse population of students, they must grapple with the critical requirement to address these students’ unique needs while heeding the call from modern Catholic Church leaders to engage in explicit antiracist action. Using the Historically Responsive Literacy Framework (HRL), this article equips Catholic high school English language arts (ELA) teachers with practical and powerful ways to create antiracist curriculum. To do this effectively, we place antiracist Young Adult (YA) literature (both fiction and nonfiction) in conversation with Catholic canonical texts and modern voices from Catholic clergy members. This paper reports on a recent survey of principals of Catholic high schools across the country regarding the existence of formal gender identity policies or informal practices with respect to the behavior and treatment of transgender students in their schools. The survey’s findings are discussed in the context of recent developments with respect to the science, clinical interventions, and legal accommodations surrounding gender variance. The paper also describes the political developments with respect to this issue and some of the pushback in communities of faith. This study explores the commitment of a school faculty to use the pedagogical practices needed to employ a project-based unit of Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STREAM). The unit of study concentrated on environmental sustainability of butterflies through project-based learning (PBL). Teacher interviews were analyzed to reveal the similarities and differences, strengths and weaknesses in the teachers’ reactions to implementing a cross-curricula content unit designed for a pre-kindergarten (PK) to eighth grade school. Relationship Between Course Placement Criteria And Mathematics Achievement In An All-Boys Catholic School, Daniel J. Mccue

This study explored the mathematics course placement process for incoming students in an all-boys Catholic high school. The sequential nature of mathematics significantly impacts students’ opportunity to learn; moreover, the mathematics course taken by a student during ninth grade can have far-reaching effects. Previous studies have found that ninth-grade students enrolled in Geometry, rather than Algebra 1, have a greater chance of completing advanced mathematics courses and experiencing increased mathematics success. Thus, adequately prepared students should be placed in Geometry whenever possible. While the mission statements of Catholic schools include strong language on faith formation, Catholic schools are more often identified with high-quality academics and less for the development of faith. A qualitative descriptive study was designed to understand how Rhode Island Catholic secondary school graduates described the influence of the Catholic educational mission on the formation of faith and personal life values. The results of the study indicate the graduates of Catholic secondary schools in Rhode Island recognized the strength of the academic programs at the four identified Catholic secondary schools. Catholic school personnel are increasingly recognizing that many of their students, including students with disabilities, need and benefit from inclusive educational practices. These oftentimes ad hoc practices are motivated by the Catholic identity and mission of the school, as well as the diverse educational needs of students. This essay reflects on the spiritual lessons learned as a Catholic graduate-level teacher prep program guided novice teachers through the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic. We observed the importance of articulating a clear spiritual vision rooted in scripture, history, and personal experience. The guiding spiritual lens has been the Emmaus story which helps us look to the past and to the future as we form and support early-career educators in Catholic schools.

In practice, sports often play a major role in shaping the identity of Catholic schools. Theorists consider how to better integrate religious faith into sports programs. We argue that it is also imperative to investigate how the schools' catholicity influences educator-coaches experiences of sport. Based upon analysis of a phenomenological research project in Edmonton, Canada, our study uncovered factors of lift (i.e., feeling part of something bigger, mentor-coaches as doers of the Word, and communal or relational elements) and drag (i.e., treatment of non-Catholics, seeking an authentic faith, and a lack of reflection on the integration of sport and faith). …

Catholic schools primarily should be in the business of making saints. This article identifies and explores a meaningful, engaging point of contact between mathematics and theology for high school math classes, the Fibonacci Sequence. This sequence serves as an engaging introduction to sequences and series; more importantly, the topic can be used as a springboard to theological discussions. The paper will provide a brief historical background to the Fibonacci Sequence, an explanation of how it can be used in a high school math classroom, and an exploration of three different theological touchpoints that the Fibonacci Sequence offers.

"It's More Than Just Religion:" Teaching History In A Catholic School, Colleen Fitzpatrick

This study explores how one teacher, Rebecca, makes sense of teaching history in a Catholic school. This Catholic school had a clear religious mission and did not have required curriculum or high-stakes tests. Yet, findings indicate that Rebecca did not attend to the religious mission in her teaching and, in absence of curricula or high-stakes tests, she relied heavily on the textbook. Findings demonstrate the need for a greater understanding of what curricular content is being taught and learned in Catholic elementary and secondary schools and how it aligns with the mission and purpose of Catholic schools.

High School Options And Post-Secondary Student Success: The Catholic School Advantage, David J. Fleming, Stéphane Lavertu, William Crawford

Journal of Catholic Education

Recognizing that post-secondary student attainment and achievement is of increasing import for economic success, this study compares the post-secondary performance of students who attended public and private high schools. The results generally indicate that students who attended Catholic high schools had higher college GPAs, were more likely to graduate, and were more likely to graduate with a STEM degree. This Catholic school advantage was wide-ranging, benefiting many subgroups of students, including non-white, low income, urban, and low-achieving students. We controlled for a rich set of factors and conducted sensitivity analyses to establish the strength of these results.
