Do I Enact What I Learn?: Examining Novice Science Teachers Approximations Of Practice, Helene Pollins
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this study was to examine novice secondary science teachers’ enactment of their teaching philosophies in their lesson planning and teaching. The framework was based on three theories: approximations of practice, teachers’ knowledge of content and students (KCS), and experiential learning. The design for this research used a qualitative case study design. The participants were three novice science teachers in a large school district in the Southwestern United States. Data sources included teaching philosophies, three semi-structured interviews, lesson plans, and observations. Three research questions were: what are novice science teachers’ major philosophies at the entry level of teaching; …

Integrating A Farm Study Into A Mixed Age Classroom, Rachel Kanegis
Graduate Student Independent Studies
This paper, Integrating A Farm Study Into A Mixed Age Classroom, explores the impact and benefits of integrating a farm study into a classroom. It reports on the course and the results of how students responded to the farm study over one full school year. In addition, it shows how the integrated farm study could be incorporated into the core academic topics such as reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. In fact, this paper proves how students become more motivated and engaged to learn in the core academic topics through their focus on the farm study. The class that …

Included in this publication are junior modelling problems for upper primary, junior or middle secondary levels; intermediate modelling problems for junior or middle secondary levels; and senior modelling problems for middle or senior secondary levels. A specific purpose of this material is to provide additional support to assist teachers and schools in choosing and mentoring student teams to participate in …
Engaging Students In The Practice Of Statistics Through Undergraduate Research, Debra L. Hydorn
Engaging Students In The Practice Of Statistics Through Undergraduate Research, Debra L. Hydorn
Mathematics
As statisticians, we engage in a variety of activities, some of which are regularly integrated into our undergraduate courses. However, the individual courses that comprise a mathematics or statistics degree program might not provide students with experiences in the broader range of activities that define the practice of statistics. To remedy this situation, faculty can consider developing and mentoring undergraduate research projects. This article briefly discusses the skills that comprise statistical practice along with some course and program options for helping students to develop these skills. Then, types of undergraduate research projects in statistics are described to help faculty generate …
