Authentic Science In Education: Studies In Course-Based Research At The United States Military Academy, Anthony M. Chase

This dissertation consists of two studies at the United States Military Academy. Both studies involve the use of Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs). These experiences give students the ability to engage in undergraduate research at an early point in their academic career by replacing traditional laboratory activities with semester-long research projects. Both studies show an implementation of this type of instruction from the Center for Authentic Science Practice in Education (CASPiE). Study 1 shows the specific method of implementation at the military academy and explores learning-based outcomes. Primarily the outcome of critical thinking is demonstrated. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) mengembangkan instrumen penilaian berupa tes pilihan ganda critical thinking dan practical skill yang valid dan reliabel (2) memetakan critical thinking dan practical skill peserta didik SMP. Prosedur pengembangan dalam penelitian ini mengacu pada langkah-langkah model prosedural dari Model 4D Thiagarajan. Hasil penelitian adalah sebagai berikut. (1) Instrumen penilaian IPA berupa tes pilihan ganda terdiri atas 36 item yang fit. The QEP that was implemented in this study focused on enhancing students’ critical thinking skills. A pretest/ posttest approach was used to assess students’ critical thinking progress in freshman level core English and Math courses. An intervention was performed involving intensive instruction and assignments relating to a set of reasoning strategies such as: analytical, analogical, inductive, deductive, and comparative reasoning, among others. When students performed well on assignments by applying the reasoning strategies, it was assumed that critical thinking occurred. Students' critical thinking in mathematics was a concern for grade 5 through 8 teachers at a Title 1 public school in the northeastern United States because of the students' poor performance on constructed response questions on the state's mathematics exam. In this exam, students were required to justify their answers in writing. When teachers recognize the connection between writing and critical thinking, they can devise strategies to help students develop mathematical literacy.
